On September 16, the three major A-share indices opened lower and moved higher, maintaining red-chip fluctuations in the afternoon and closing collectively higher. The Shanghai Composite Index closed at 3891.60 points, up 0.71%; the Shenzhen Component Index closed at 13454.74 points, up 1.26%; the ChiNext Index closed at 3311.47 points, up 1.96%; the STAR 50 closed at 1616.19 points, up 4.14%; the BSE 50 closed at 1040.29 points, up 1.15%. The combined turnover of the Shanghai and Shenzhen markets was 1,839.122 billion yuan, an increase of 226.405 billion yuan from the previous trading day.
In the Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share markets, 4,170 stocks rose, 1,189 fell, and 205 were flat, with 91 hitting the daily limit up and 4 hitting the daily limit down. The proportion of rising stocks exceeded 70%. By sector, communications equipment, semiconductors, electronic chemicals, precious metals, non-metallic materials, and optical optoelectronics led the gains; construction machinery, livestock breeding, aviation airports, insurance, baijiu, banking, shipping ports, and complete automobiles led the declines.
Drivers
The leading directions on the day were concentrated in two main lines: the semiconductor industry chain and computing power hardware. The SW communications equipment and semiconductor industry indices rose 5.18% and 4.44%, respectively, while the STAR 50 closed up 4.14%.
On the news front, a CITIC SEC research report expected that the relatively tight heavily doped silicon wafers are likely to continue rising in price in the second half of the year, and related companies may raise next year's long-term agreement prices in September to October; the 27th China International Optoelectronic Exposition (CIOE 2026) was held in Shenzhen from September 9 to 11. CICC released a research report on September 16 stating that "locking orders" and "locking materials" became key words in exhibition surveys, with order schedules for some high-speed optical chip companies extending to 2028 and beyond, and visibility for optical module orders covering 2027 and beyond; a Goldman Sachs report released on September 7 raised its forecast for the global optical module market space from 2026 to 2028.
On the policy front, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and five other departments jointly issued the "Opinions on Promoting the High-Quality Development of Historical Classic Industries" on September 7, incorporating traditional specialty industries such as brewing into the support framework. The yellow rice wine concept rose 7.65% on the day, ranking first among concept sector gainers. On the day, the combined turnover of the Shanghai and Shenzhen markets increased by 226.405 billion yuan from the previous trading day, but sectors such as banking, insurance, complete automobiles, and construction machinery closed lower.
Hot sectors
1. Semiconductors: The semiconductor industry chain strengthened across the board, with silicon wafers, silicon carbide, and equipment leading the gains. GRINM Semiconductor Materials hit the 20CM daily limit up, Crystal Growth & Energy Equipment Inc. hit the 20CM daily limit up, Grinm Advanced Materials, Hangzhou Lion Microelectronics, and Zhejiang MTCN Technology hit the daily limit up, and SICC Co.,Ltd. rose more than 11%. 2. Computing power hardware: CPO, optical communications, and optical fiber directions collectively surged. Shenzhen Zesum Technology and Jiangxi Welgao Electronics hit the 20CM daily limit up, Accelink Technologies, Jiangsu Etern, Nanjing Huamai Technology, and Fujian Qingshan Paper Industry hit the daily limit up, Hubei DOTI Micro Technology rose more than 14%, and EverProX Technologies rose more than 12%. After surveying the 27th China International Optoelectronic Exposition, CICC noted that order schedules for some high-speed optical chip companies have extended to 2028 and beyond, and visibility for optical module orders covers 2027 and beyond.
3. Yellow rice wine: The yellow rice wine concept index rose 7.65%, ranking first among concept sector gainers on the day. Kuaijishan Shaoxing Rice Wine recorded a second consecutive daily limit up, while Zhejiang Guyuelongshan Shaoxing Wine and ShangHai JinFeng Wine hit the daily limit up. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and five other departments jointly issued the "Opinions on Promoting the High-Quality Development of Historical Classic Industries" on September 7, including brewing, to which yellow rice wine belongs, in the scope of historical classic industries; a Huatai research report believed that the volume-price logic of the yellow rice wine industry is expected to undergo reconstruction.
Sectors in correction
The construction machinery sector was among the biggest decliners on the day, with the SW construction machinery industry index falling 4.17%. Sany Heavy Industry fell 6.72%, while Guangxi Liugong Machinery, Shantui Construction Machinery, and Jiangsu Hengli Hydraulic declined in tandem. The livestock breeding index fell 2.43%. The aviation airport, insurance, baijiu, banking, shipping port, and complete automobile concept indices fell 0.92%, 0.85%, 0.85%, 0.68%, 0.67%, and 0.31%, respectively, all within 1%. In terms of individual stocks, Guilin Tourism Corporation hit the daily limit down in a straight line, Anhui Ankai Automobile fell 7.75%, Bank of Ningbo fell 2.42%, and Contemporary Amperex Technology fell 3.44%.
