BMO upgraded Enbridge to "Outperform," believing its recent pullback and $41 billion project backlog offer a good investment opportunity.
BMO Capital upgraded pipeline operator Enbridge (ENB.US) to "Outperform" from "Market Perform" with a price target of C$79.50, with analysts saying the stock's recent pullback and improved growth visibility make it an attractive investment in a volatile macroeconomic environment. BMO analyst Ben Pham said Enbridge shares have underperformed Canadian midstream and pipeline peers year-to-date, likely due to rising bond yields, a lack of visibility into the company's roughly 5% growth guidance through the end of the decade, and a recent equity financing; meanwhile, peers are seen as having higher growth rates. The analyst said Enbridge operates more like a diversified utility, prioritizing high-quality, long-duration contracted assets over higher-beta unconventional growth; he believes the company's scale, limited commodity exposure and diversified assets are undervalued. "Few companies have a visible, high-quality organic growth plan like Enbridge with a secured backlog of $41 billion, plus another $20 billion of new projects expected to be sanctioned in 2026-2027," Pham said; at the same time, opportunistic acquisitions such as Salt Creek Midstream and the Tallgrass crude oil transportation business carry embedded future upside. The analyst said Enbridge's roughly $3 billion equity financing, along with an innovative $2.7 billion joint venture with KKR for its Westcoast B.C. pipeline, have strengthened the balance sheet and provided additional financial flexibility for potential new growth opportunities.
