J.P. Morgan: Contemporary Amperex Technology (03750) acquisition of battery assets signals the start of industry consolidation; maintain "Overweight" rating.
The bank noted that CATL remains its top pick in China's battery value chain.
J.P. Morgan released a research report stating that Contemporary Amperex Technology (03750) has received approval to acquire equity in Chongqing Yaoning New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of GEELY AUTO (00175), which owns a nearly completed 24 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery production project. The report suggests that this transaction is not merely capacity expansion, but likely an early signal that China's battery industry is entering a consolidation phase, reflecting the challenges facing original equipment manufacturers' (OEMs) strategy of building their own battery capacity, while also highlighting the strategic value of approved capacity assets. The bank noted that Contemporary Amperex Technology remains its top pick in China's battery value chain, with a target price of HK$725 and an "Overweight" rating.
J.P. Morgan pointed out that the transaction is positive for industry structure. Rather than adding another independent battery supplier to an already highly competitive market, the deal places the assets under the operational control of an industry leader. The bank believes this could help reduce fragmented competition, improve capital discipline, and support healthier industry profitability in the long run.
The report noted that Chongqing Yaoning was originally developed within the Geely ecosystem as part of its battery self-supply strategy, but appears set to be transferred to Contemporary Amperex Technology before reaching commercial production. The bank believes this reinforces the significant operational, technical, and capital requirements associated with battery cell manufacturing. At the same time, it believes investors may continue to overestimate the speed and scale of automakers' battery self-sufficiency, while underestimating the manufacturing advantages of industry leaders such as Contemporary Amperex Technology.
