Recently, market rumors have circulated that ByteDance has hired a former executive from Coatue Management to head its corporate investment team. The social media giant is accelerating its investment layout to advance its rapidly expanding artificial intelligence strategy. According to a report citing people familiar with the matter, Jiang Kai has joined ByteDance as the head of its financial investment department in Hong Kong, reporting to Chief Financial Officer Julie Gao. The report, citing informed sources, stated that this appointment will help ByteDance establish a more systematic mechanism for investing in emerging technology startups.
Jiang Kai is a well-known figure in China's venture capital and private equity circles. Public information shows that Jiang Kai graduated from Peking University in 2010 and joined Morgan Stanley as an analyst after graduation; in 2012, he joined the U.S. private equity firm Providence; in 2015, he joined Coatue Management, responsible for Asian technology and consumer investments, based in Hong Kong; two years after joining Coatue, Jiang Kai was promoted to head of Coatue's China business in 2017, and was promoted to Coatue partner in 2020.
In 2017, Coatue established a capital partnership with ByteDance and made its first investment. Since then, Coatue has continued to add investments across multiple rounds, at its peak holding ByteDance shares worth billions of dollars. Coatue founder Philippe Laffont also once served on ByteDance's board of directors.
