The Hang Seng Index Company has authorized the world's first warrant linked to the Hang Seng Biotechnology Index, deepening the connectivity between the capital markets of Hong Kong and Malaysia.
On September 9, the Hang Seng Index Company announced the authorization of Kenanga Investment Bank Berhad to launch the world's first warrants linked to the Hang Seng Biotechnology Index in Malaysia, marking an important step for the Hang Seng Index Company in overseas index licensing and product expansion. This cross-market collaboration was showcased at the 11th Belt and Road Summit co-organized by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, and was listed as one of over 30 commercial collaboration cases. It reflects the increasing demand for Hong Kong index-linked products to expand into the Belt and Road markets and deepens the connectivity between the capital markets of Hong Kong and Malaysia. The Hang Seng Biotechnology Index tracks the 30 largest biotechnology companies listed in Hong Kong that meet the eligibility criteria for southbound Stock Connect trading. This index has become an important benchmark for reflecting innovation and development in the biotechnology sector. As of August 31, 2026, the Hang Seng Biotechnology Index has increased by 98.5% over the past two years. Futures linked to the Hang Seng Biotechnology Index were launched last year, further expanding the product ecosystem of this index. On August 20, 2026, the single-day trading volume of Hang Seng Biotechnology Index futures hit a new high, reaching 1,414 contracts, reflecting the growing market demand for biotechnology investments. He Lichi, Commissioner for the Belt and Road initiative of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, stated: I am pleased to witness the various collaborations reached today. As a 'super connector', 'super value add' and 'Belt and Road' resource coordination hub, Hong Kong connects enterprises with international capital and helps expand the 'Belt and Road' market. With a focus on creating more sustainable and inclusive financial solutions, we aim to accelerate high-quality cooperation, promote deeper integration, and share prosperity, building a more resilient future for all participating economies. Muzambli Markam, Consul General of Malaysia in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Macao Special Administrative Region, said: We are thrilled to witness Kenanga Investment Bank Berhad reach this milestone collaboration with the Hang Seng Index Company. Malaysia is actively promoting the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and strengthening its high-value healthcare and biotechnology ecosystem. This collaboration aligns with our national vision in expanding innovative technologies and cross-border financial products. We promote deeper economic integration by connecting Malaysian investors with Hong Kongs world-class indices and capital markets, while highlighting Malaysia's role as a vibrant investment destination in the region. Li Wenlong, Executive Chairman of the Hang Seng Index Company, stated: Biotechnology is a strategic pillar industry in the country's 14th Five-Year Plan and a key focus of Hong Kong's innovation and technology development strategy. We are honored to support the development of this industry through index solutions. The launch of the worlds first warrants linked to the Hang Seng Biotechnology Index provides global investors with more index-linked tools and helps us aim to develop the Hang Seng Biotechnology Index into another flagship index. By expanding the index to overseas markets, we deepen the connectivity between Hong Kong and Malaysia and facilitate cross-market capital flow under the Belt and Road initiative. We will continue to strengthen overseas cooperation, expand the international influence of the index, and solidify Hong Kong's role as a super connector.
