Google is planning its largest investment in Europe, with a project in Finland involving the construction of AI infrastructure worth at least 13 billion euros (approximately 15.1 billion dollars).
It has been noted that Alphabet Inc. Class C, under Alphabet (GOOGL.US), is planning its largest investment in Europe, involving an AI infrastructure project in Finland worth at least 13 billion (approximately $15.1 billion). The company stated in a press release on Wednesday that the investment over the next two years will include the construction of at least three new data centers and an expansion of its existing facility in the southeastern city of Hamina. Alphabet Inc. Class C is taking full advantage of Finland's relatively cold climaterequiring minimal additional cooling, while the heat generated by servers can be repurposed for residential heating. Furthermore, 96% of the Nordic country's electricity comes from carbon-free sources, primarily a combination of nuclear power and renewable energy. The area also boasts ample freshwater resources, and Finlands data centers are built using closed-loop systems to reduce water waste. Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat stated in the release, Alphabet Inc. Class C is proud to further deepen our roots in Finland through this company's largest single investment in Europe. This move is part of Alphabets efforts to accelerate the expansion of its AI computing capabilities. To outpace competitors in the race to dominate the AI sector, the Silicon Valley giant increased its capital spending budget to a record $20.5 billion in July of this year. For Finland, which is struggling to revive its economy, this investment provides a significant boost. The Nordic country has been facing weak demand, trade disruptions with neighboring Russia, and the impacts of fiscal austerity policies aimed at controlling public finances. Its unemployment rate has exceeded 10%, marking the highest level in the EU. The company expects that the project will support over 37,000 jobs nationwide during the construction phase, with approximately 16,000 in the construction sector. Once completed, these facilities are anticipated to support around 7,000 jobs, including those in the supply and local service industries. The new data centers will be built in the northern parts of the country, specifically in Kainuu, Muhos, and Vala. Alphabet Inc. Class C has previously purchased land in the area for potential data center development. The selection of these locations aims to leverage the existing grid infrastructure near carbon-free energy sources. Asta Sivonen-Ponka, CEO of transmission system operator Fingrid Oyj, pointed out in the statement, The locations at strong grid nodes help enhance the entire power system and ensure cost-effective development of the network. Alphabet Inc. Class C also stated that it is expanding its energy infrastructure to support the project by signing new wind power agreements and deploying a 94-megawatt battery system at the Kainuu site to help balance the grid. These data centers are all equipped for waste heat recovery. Power company Fortum Oyj also announced it has signed a 22-year power purchase agreement with Alphabet Inc. Class C, covering the extended operational lifetime of the Loviisa nuclear power plant. Fortum indicated that the power involved in the transaction will equal 50% of this dual-reactor nuclear plant's capacity from 2030 to 2049. According to the statement, telecom operator Elisa Oyj and network infrastructure provider Nokia Oyj Sponsored ADR will provide network connectivity support for the new data centers.
