The National Bureau of Statistics announced that in August 2026, the national consumer price index for residents increased by 0.8% compared to the same period last year.
In August 2026, the national consumer price index (CPI) for residents rose by 0.8% year-on-year. Among them, urban areas saw an increase of 0.8%, while rural areas experienced a 0.7% rise; food prices fell by 1.4%, while non-food prices increased by 1.2%; the prices of consumer goods rose by 0.8%, and service prices also rose by 0.8%. From January to August, the average national consumer price index increased by 0.9% compared to the same period last year. In August, the national consumer price index rose by 0.4% month-on-month. Urban areas saw a 0.4% increase, while rural areas also experienced a 0.4% rise; food prices rose by 0.4%, and non-food prices increased by 0.3%; consumer goods prices rose by 0.6%, while service prices only increased by 0.1%. I. Year-on-year price changes for various goods and services In August, prices for food, tobacco, alcohol, and dining out fell by 0.7% year-on-year, impacting the CPI by about -0.21 percentage points. Within food, the prices of livestock meat fell by 5.1%, affecting the CPI by about -0.21 percentage points, with pork prices dropping by 11.8%; fresh vegetable prices declined by 2.8%, impacting the CPI by approximately -0.05 percentage points; dairy prices fell by 1.4%, affecting the CPI by about -0.01 percentage points; aquatic product prices decreased by 0.6%, impacting the CPI by about -0.01 percentage points; while egg prices rose by 15.0%, affecting the CPI by approximately +0.07 percentage points. Among the other seven major categories, six experienced price increases and one saw a decrease. Specifically, prices for other goods and services, healthcare, and transportation and communication rose by 7.3%, 2.7%, and 2.5%, respectively, while education, culture, and entertainment, clothing, and daily necessities and services saw increases of 1.4%, 1.3%, and 0.7%. Housing prices declined by 0.3%. II. Month-on-month price changes for various goods and services In August, prices for food, tobacco, alcohol, and dining out rose by 0.3% month-on-month, impacting the CPI by about +0.07 percentage points. Within food, fresh vegetable prices increased by 5.5%, affecting the CPI by approximately +0.09 percentage points; egg prices rose by 2.0%, impacting the CPI by about +0.01 percentage points; livestock meat prices increased by 0.9%, impacting the CPI by around +0.03 percentage points, with pork prices rising by 1.3%; fresh fruit prices fell by 2.5%, impacting the CPI by about -0.05 percentage points; while aquatic product prices decreased by 0.9%, affecting the CPI by approximately -0.02 percentage points. Among the other seven major categories, prices showed two increases, three remained the same, and two decreased. Notably, transportation and communication prices rose by 1.7% and 1.5% respectively; prices for housing, education and culture, and healthcare remained stable; while prices for daily necessities and services, and clothing declined by 0.2% and 0.1%, respectively.
