Discipline Over Reaction: UBS Asia Markets Chief Makes the Case for Endurance in Volatile Markets
For Wannenmacher, who serves as UBS’s head of Global Markets and co-head of OneUBS in Asia-Pacific, endurance is more than a personal philosophy. He first entered an ultra-marathon across the Gobi Desert in 2008 despite never having run farther than 10 kilometres, later completing another ultra-marathon and becoming a regular participant in Hong Kong’s 100km Oxfam Trailwalker. He applies the same principle to markets: set a clear objective, prepare for multiple scenarios and avoid abandoning the long-term strategy simply because short-term conditions become uncomfortable. In trading and investment banking, that means stress-testing portfolios and strategies before volatility arrives, then recalibrating, hedging or pivoting when circumstances change rather than reacting impulsively to every headline.
That philosophy is especially relevant in 2026. Investors have had to process geopolitical instability, changes in monetary-policy expectations, volatile energy prices and sharp rotations within technology and AI-related equities. UBS itself remains constructive on global equities but has repeatedly stressed diversification and selectivity as valuations rise and the market becomes increasingly sensitive to whether massive AI investment can eventually generate sufficient returns. The bank expects AI-related capital expenditure to remain a powerful structural driver, but its research also highlights inflation, geopolitical rivalry, debt concerns and disappointment in AI monetisation as risks capable of producing sudden market corrections. The lesson is that conviction in a long-term theme does not remove the need to continuously test assumptions.
Technology is increasingly strengthening that process. Wannenmacher says advances in artificial intelligence allow financial institutions to run sophisticated scenarios and update models at speeds that were previously impossible, helping market professionals distinguish important signals from short-term noise. The comparison with endurance sports is useful: wearable technology does not eliminate unexpected weather or physical fatigue, but it gives athletes better information about when to change pace. In markets, AI can perform a similar function by processing larger datasets, identifying emerging risks and giving traders and advisers more time to respond. The competitive advantage therefore comes not simply from having more data, but from combining technology with disciplined human judgement about which information actually matters.
UBS’s recent performance provides a practical backdrop to that strategy. The bank reported US$2.8 billion in net profit for the second quarter of 2026 and US$5.8 billion for the first half, while group invested assets reached US$7.3 trillion. Its Investment Bank posted a 31% year-on-year increase in underlying second-quarter revenue, while Asia-Pacific Global Wealth Management delivered a 48% increase in pre-tax profit and a pre-tax margin of around 45%. Client activity in the region also remained strong. These results come as UBS completes the complex integration of Credit Suisse, with cumulative gross cost savings reaching US$12.6 billion by the end of the second quarter and the wider integration still targeted for substantial completion by the end of 2026.
The importance of Wannenmacher’s “OneUBS” role therefore extends beyond a management slogan. Wealthy Asian clients increasingly require advice that crosses traditional boundaries between wealth management, investment banking, lending, structured products and global markets. UBS has argued that bringing these capabilities together can make the institution more responsive when markets move quickly, while allowing clients to access expertise across regions rather than relying on isolated business units. For investors, the broader message is that financial endurance does not mean remaining passive. It means maintaining a long-term objective while constantly updating the route used to reach it. In a market increasingly dominated by fast information and faster algorithms, the ability to distinguish temporary disruption from a genuine change in fundamentals may become even more valuable.
