As of the end of July this year, the installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation in China has reached 1.286 billion kilowatts, surpassing the installed capacity of coal power generation for the first time.
According to data from the National Energy Administration, by the end of July this year, China's installed capacity of photovoltaic (PV) power generation reached 1.286 billion kilowatts, with centralized PV accounting for 704 million kilowatts and distributed PV for 582 million kilowatts. For the first time, the installed capacity of PV power generation exceeded that of coal power, making it the largest type of power generation source in China. (Coal power installed capacity is 1.285 billion kilowatts)
In July this year, the newly installed capacity of PV power generation was 13.73 million kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 43%. From January to July this year, the cumulative newly installed capacity of PV power generation was 85.65 million kilowatts, a year-on-year decrease of 62% (mainly due to a surge in installations before May 2025, when the baseline was relatively high); PV power generation reached 802.4 billion kilowatt-hours, representing a year-on-year increase of 15.5%, exceeding the growth rate of overall electricity consumption by 10.8 percentage points; the share of PV power generation in total electricity consumption has reached 13%, an increase of 1.7 percentage points compared to last year's total. In recent years, the installed capacity and generation of PV power have maintained a rapid growth trend, and their role in ensuring electricity supply and promoting energy transition has become increasingly prominent.
