The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced that as of July 31, 2026, the total assets of the foreign exchange fund were HK$4,403.7 billion, a decrease of HK$59.9 billion compared to the end of June 2026, with HK dollar assets decreasing by HK$77.2 billion and foreign currency assets increasing by HK$17.3 billion.
On August 31, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced that as of July 31, 2026, the total assets of the Exchange Fund amounted to HKD 4,403.7 billion, a decrease of HKD 59.9 billion from the end of June 2026. Among this, HKD assets decreased by HKD 77.2 billion, while foreign currency assets increased by HKD 17.3 billion. The decrease in HKD assets was primarily due to a reduction in the end-of-month balance of Exchange Fund notes and bonds that were subscribed but not settled, although this reduction was partially offset by a revaluation of Hong Kong stocks at market prices. The increase in foreign currency assets was mainly due to an increase in currency swap agreements and interest income from investments, although this increase was also partially offset by a revaluation of investments at market prices.
The Currency Board accounts indicated that at the end of July 2026, the monetary base was HKD 2,080.1 billion, an increase of HKD 5.1 billion from the end of June 2026, representing a growth rate of 0.2%. The increase in the monetary base was mainly due to the amortization of the discount on issued Exchange Fund notes and bonds and an increase in the total amount of certificates of indebtedness.
The total amount of supporting assets at the end of July 2026 increased by HKD 6.2 billion to HKD 2,326.8 billion, with an increase rate of 0.3%. The increase in supporting assets was primarily due to interest income from investments and the issuance of certificates of indebtedness, although this increase was partially offset by a revaluation of investments at market prices. The supporting ratio rose from 111.84% at the end of June 2026 to 111.86% at the end of July 2026.
