The Japanese automaker plans to extend this technology to more models starting in 2030, while also concurrently advancing Level 4 autonomous driving for commercial vehicles, with the goal of implementation by the end of this decade.
Toyota expects its e-Palette all-electric modeldesigned to operate as a shuttle buswill achieve Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities as early as the fiscal year 2027, and plans to accelerate the deployment of autonomous commercial vehicles in Japan starting in 2030.
Japan officially approved Level 4 autonomous driving on public roads in 2023, setting a goal of operating 10,000 autonomous buses, taxis, and other vehicles nationwide by the fiscal year 2030. Additionally, Toyota is considering collaborating with Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, to develop a Robotaxi business, although a specific launch date has not yet been determined.
From a technical architecture perspective, Toyota plans to combine its AI-based end-to-end autonomous driving system with a rule-based guardrail mechanism. The latter serves as a safety intervention facility that intervenes when the AI exhibits unexpected behavior, while also playing an important role in providing explanations for cause tracing in the event of an accident. The company believes this approach could reduce traffic accident fatalities by approximately 60%.
Akihiro Sarada, head of Toyota's software development center, stated: We will develop Level 4 autonomous driving from a technical perspective, but in terms of commercialization, it will be offered to the market in the form of Level 2++.
Toyota is not the only Japanese automaker accelerating its autonomous driving initiatives. Nissan plans to equip some mass-produced models for the Japanese market with advanced driver assistance systems by the fiscal year 2027. Honda also plans to feature next-generation driver assistance systems in new models such as the VEZEL in 2028.
