Chinese robotics maker Unitree has raised $905 million in a record-breaking, heavily oversubscribed Shanghai IPO, marking a major milestone for China's ambitions in humanoid robotics and embodied artificial intelligence despite ongoing software challenges and early-stage industrial adoption.

A major benchmark in the global technology sector will be established on Wednesday as the world’s leading manufacturer of humanoid robots by sales volume completes its initial public offering on Shanghai’s STAR Market. Raising approximately 6.1 billion yuan, equivalent to roughly $905 million, the market debut for Hangzhou-based Unitree saw demand exceed available shares by more than 8,000 times. This milestone represents a record subscription level for China’s tech-centric stock venue, positioning the company as the first humanoid robotics developer to secure a primary listing within mainland China, whereas prominent peers like UBTECH and Dobot operate on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Unitree’s trajectory highlights the rapid convergence of mechanical engineering and state-backed strategic industrial policy. Founded in 2016 in China’s eastern technology hub, the company has attracted financial backing from major domestic entities including Meituan, Tencent, Alibaba, and DeepSeek. Public recognition grew following prominent media demonstrations of its agile robotic systems, culminating most recently in the unveiling of a specialized bipedal model named Superman, which reportedly achieves vertical jumps of two meters and maximum running speeds of 12.66 meters per second. The political and economic significance of these technological advances is substantial; as demographic shifts compress the domestic labor force, central policymakers have prioritized embodied artificial intelligence as a core frontier for future economic growth and global competitiveness, particularly against the United States.

Financially, the organization has demonstrated exceptional expansion within a fledgling market. Its total revenue surged tenfold over a two-year period, reaching approximately 1.7 billion yuan ($252 million) in 2025, alongside a net profit of 278 million yuan ($41 million). Unitree delivered more than 5,500 humanoid units internationally last year, securing the highest global market share by delivery volume and surpassing Western competitors such as Tesla, Figure AI, and Boston Dynamics. In addition to bipedal systems, quadrupedal robotic products continue to represent a stable foundation for the business, contributing roughly 42% of its overall revenue in the preceding year.

Despite these commercial milestones, operational data indicates that the industry remains in an early stage of commercial integration. Filings reveal that academic and research institutions account for the overwhelming majority of current product deployments, while industrial and commercial applications comprised under 10% of total sales through the first three quarters of 2025. Industry analysts point out that while Chinese firms excel in hardware production, mechanical agility, and manufacturing scale, significant constraints remain regarding foundational AI models and software intelligence required for complex real-world tasks.

To maintain its competitive edge and overcome software limitations, Unitree intends to channel the capital raised from its public offering toward expanded manufacturing capacity and advanced research into embodied artificial intelligence. This technological gap has also prompted strategic international collaboration, including a co-development partnership established with Nvidia in mid-2025 aimed at elevating the cognitive capabilities of its robotic platforms. The successful listing is expected to serve as a valuation benchmark for secondary offerings and upcoming initial public offerings across the broader robotics supply chain.
