CANBRIDGE-B (01228) has announced that Mirebepant, used for treating Alagille syndrome (ALGS) and progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC), has been approved by the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Administration for inclusion in the national health insurance reimbursement program, which will officially take effect on September 1, 2026. Mirebepant is a minimally absorbed ileal bile acid transporter inhibitor that can block the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids, lower bile acid levels in the liver and serum, reduce liver damage mediated by these levels, and alleviate cholestatic pruritus (severe itching). Mirebepant is the first drug approved in mainland China, Hong Kong, and the United States for the treatment of cholestatic pruritus in ALGS patients aged 3 months and older, and it is also the first drug approved in the European Union and Taiwan for the treatment of ALGS patients aged 2 months and older. Additionally, Mirebepant has been approved in the United States for treating cholestatic pruritus in PFIC patients aged 12 months and older; in the European Union, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, the approved population is for patients aged 3 months and older. Mirebepant has been granted breakthrough therapy designation for the treatment of ALGS and PFIC by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA); it has also obtained orphan drug designation from the FDA, the European Medicines Agency, and Taiwan's Food and Drug Administration for ALGS and PFIC. The company believes that Mirebepant is the first approved treatment for ALGS and PFIC in Taiwan, with both indications simultaneously included in the national health insurance payment, representing a significant benefit for local patients and an important milestone in the company's commercialization strategy for rare diseases. This initiative will substantially reduce the long-term economic burden faced by families of patients in Taiwan. The company looks forward to collaborating with the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Administration and the cholestatic liver disease community to ensure that more patients can benefit from Mirebepant treatment as soon as possible, thereby maximizing their quality of life.
