On August 14, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange announced preliminary figures for Chinas balance of payments for the second quarter and the first half of 2026.
In the second quarter of 2026, China recorded a current account surplus of 1.3337 trillion yuan, of which the merchandise trade surplus was 1.9065 trillion yuan, the services trade deficit was 358.4 billion yuan, the primary income deficit was 257.2 billion yuan, and the secondary income surplus was 42.8 billion yuan. The capital and financial account (including net errors and omissions for the quarter) posted a deficit of 1.3337 trillion yuan, while foreign direct investment into China remained a net inflow.
In the first half of 2026, China achieved a current account surplus of 2.6174 trillion yuan, with a merchandise trade surplus of 3.6284 trillion yuan, a services trade deficit of 772 billion yuan, a primary income deficit of 308.6 billion yuan, and a secondary income surplus of 69.5 billion yuan. The capital and financial account (including net errors and omissions for the second quarter) reported a deficit of 2.6439 trillion yuan.
In U.S. dollar terms, the current account surplus for the second quarter of 2026 was 195.1 billion dollars, including a merchandise trade surplus of 278.9 billion dollars, a services trade deficit of 52.4 billion dollars, a primary income deficit of 37.6 billion dollars, and a secondary income surplus of 6.3 billion dollars. The capital and financial account (including net errors and omissions for the quarter) reported a deficit of 195.1 billion dollars.
In U.S. dollar terms, the current account surplus for the first half of 2026 was 379.4 billion dollars, which comprised a merchandise trade surplus of 526.3 billion dollars, a services trade deficit of 112 billion dollars, a primary income deficit of 45.1 billion dollars, and a secondary income surplus of 10.1 billion dollars. The capital and financial account (including net errors and omissions for the second quarter) posted a deficit of 383.2 billion dollars.
In SDR terms, the current account surplus for the second quarter of 2026 was 142.8 billion SDR, with a merchandise trade surplus of 204.0 billion SDR, a services trade deficit of 38.3 billion SDR, a primary income deficit of 27.5 billion SDR, and a secondary income surplus of 4.6 billion SDR. The capital and financial account (including net errors and omissions for the quarter) recorded a deficit of 142.8 billion SDR.
In SDR terms, the current account surplus for the first half of 2026 was 277.3 billion SDR, which included a merchandise trade surplus of 384.7 billion SDR, a services trade deficit of 81.8 billion SDR, a primary income deficit of 33.0 billion SDR, and a secondary income surplus of 7.4 billion SDR. The capital and financial account (including net errors and omissions for the second quarter) showed a deficit of 280.0 billion SDR.
