After the earnings report, the stock price surged by 7.43%. Is Master Kong (00322)'s performance inflection point the "best hitting zone"?
While the market is still debating the pace of consumption recovery, leading consumer brand Master Kong has already answered this question with its financial report data showing double growth in profits.
While the market is still debating the pace of consumer recovery, the consumption leader Tingyi () has already answered this question with its profit-and-revenue growth in its financial report.
On August 11, Tingyi (00322) released its interim results. In the first half of 2026, the company achieved revenue of 40.545 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 1.1%; the profit attributable to shareholders was 2.433 billion yuan, an increase of 7.1% compared to the previous year; adjusted profit attributable to shareholders increased by 15.2% year-on-year; basic earnings per share were 0.4316 yuan, with a gross profit margin increasing by 1.3 percentage points year-on-year to 35.8%.
Buoyed by this positive earnings surprise, Tingyi's stock price opened high and surged the next day, ultimately closing up 7.43% at 12.29 HKD, with a total market capitalization of 69.293 billion HKD. The market is effectively voting with real money in favor of this hard-won report showing a "dual profit increase."
Fast-forwarding to 2025, Tingyi covered up the weakness in revenue with profit growth. In the first half of 2026, it finally proclaimed the arrival of an inflection point with its performance of "dual profit increase." So, has Tingyi truly emerged from the low point of its operational cycle, and is this round of performance inflection the "sweet spot"?
The dual aspect of profit growth: stable instant noodles, and beverages reliant on tea pulling through
2025 was a year full of contradictions for Tingyi: revenue fell, yet profits increased.
In terms of revenue, the company recorded a full-year income of 79.068 billion yuan, a decrease of 2.0% year-on-year, ending eight consecutive years of growth since 2017. Beverage revenue totaled 50.123 billion yuan, down 2.9% year-on-year, becoming the largest drag; instant noodle revenue reached 28.421 billion yuan, showing a slight increase year-on-year. In terms of profit, profit attributable to shareholders was 4.501 billion yuan, a significant increase of 20.5%, reaching a historic high since its listing. The gross profit margin improved by 1.7 percentage points year-on-year to 34.8%.
Behind the profit increase without revenue growth is the profit elasticity brought about by declining raw material prices and optimization of the product structure, which offset the weakness in revenue.
However, this contradictory situation did not last long. In the first half of 2026, Tingyi experienced marginal improvement in operations, officially bidding farewell to the pattern of "profiting without revenue" seen over the past year.
Financial report data shows that in the first half of 2026, Tingyi achieved total revenue of 40.545 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 1.1%; profit attributable to shareholders was 2.433 billion yuan, up 7.1% year-on-year; adjusted net profit attributable to shareholders reached 2.43 billion yuan, marking a year-on-year increase of 15.2%. The profit elasticity was significantly greater than the revenue elasticity, with an overall gross profit margin of 35.8%, up 1.3 percentage points year-on-year.
Huatai's research report indicated that the increase in gross profit margin was driven by three forces: the year-on-year decline in raw material prices, continuous upgrades in product structure, and improved capacity utilization rates. On the expense side, the company adhered to precise spending, with sales expense ratio remaining stable year-on-year, and management expense ratio slightly rising by 0.2 percentage points to 3.8%, continuously optimizing cost-effectiveness and pushing up the net profit margin attributable to shareholders by 0.3 percentage points year-on-year to 6.0%.
By examining the two core business segments, we might be able to uncover the secret behind its dual profit increase.
On one hand, the instant noodle business supports revenue through product upgrades and an increase in the share of high-priced products.
In the first half of 2026, Tingyi's instant noodle segment achieved revenue of 13.733 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 2.0%, accounting for 33.9% of total revenue; the gross profit margin rose significantly by 2.5 percentage points to 30.3%, with segment profit attributable to shareholders at 1.003 billion yuan, an increase of 5.5% year-on-year.
Across subcategories, high-priced bagged noodles and crunchy noodles achieved higher growth rates, driven by an increased share of higher-priced products pulling up segment profits. With the overall growth space in the instant noodle industry being limited, Tingyi has shifted its growth logic towards product upgrades, exchanging structural changes for gross profit increments.
On the other hand, near double-digit growth in tea beverages underpins half of Tingyi's beverage business.
As the basic unit of the company, the beverage segment achieved revenue of 26.541 billion yuan in the first half of the year, a year-on-year increase of 0.7%, with the gross profit margin increasing by 0.7 percentage points to 38.4%. The segment's profit attributable to shareholders soared by 10.7% year-on-year to 1.478 billion yuan, significantly outpacing revenue growth.
Within this segment, there was a significant divergence in performance among subcategories: tea beverages maintained impressive growth, with revenue reaching 11.64 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.1%; however, packaged water and juice faced ongoing operational pressure, with revenues declining year-on-year by 4.9% and 13.0%, respectively; the carbonated beverage business remained relatively stable. Even in the face of weather disturbances and fierce industry competition, the company managed to maintain profit levels through product structure optimization, yet the decline in certain categories reflects the brutal reality of competition in a saturated market.
It is worth noting that while Tingyi reached an inflection point for dual profit increase in the first half of 2026, concerns cannot be overlooked. The overall revenue growth rate remains low, indicating that under a saturated market, the difficulty of scaling up significantly increases. The weakness in the beverage segment, particularly in packaged water and juice, illustrates the impact of competition diversion and shifting consumer preferences. More critically, the current improvement in gross profit margins is largely benefitting from the cyclical decline in costs; a rebound in prices of core raw materials, such as palm oil and PET, could directly suppress profit levels.
From leveraging cyclical benefits to focusing on organic upgrades, is a break in valuation the key?
Certainly, in the first half of this year, Tingyi used its dual profit increase to validate its growth potential, but it is undeniable that both the instant noodle and bottled soft drink markets have completely departed from a phase of rapid expansion, fully entering the "quality-price ratio era."
Examining in two dimensions, firstly, the instant noodle industry's overall growth ceiling has become apparent; competition is no longer simply about grabbing market share but has shifted focus to raising price bands. With high market concentration, the CR5 occupies the majority market share, and leading companies mainly rely on high-end products to obtain profit increments. The era of merely expanding channels and production capacity to drive revenue is over.
Secondly, the environment in the soft drink market is more complex. Overall consumption demand is recovering moderately, but intra-industry competition is intensifying, with ongoing price wars in the packaged water sector and a constant diversion of bottled drink consumers by freshly made tea beverages. Health-oriented and sugar-free trends have become long-term themes, and traditional sugary blockbuster products face continued limitations in growth potential. Changes in the external environment force bottled beverage companies to continuously adjust their product matrices.
In this era of escalating intra-industry competition, Tingyi's competitive advantages and weaknesses are also very clear.
In terms of core strengths, first is the channel barrier; the company boasts a deep nationwide distribution network with outstanding coverage in lower-tier markets, making it one of the core moats for fast-moving consumer goods companies. Second is the synergy between its dual main businesses, instant noodles and beverages, which helps smooth out fluctuations in any single category and stabilizes the establishment of major products. Third is its excellent cost control ability, leveraging scale procurement and capacity optimization to fully capture cost cycle benefits while continuously promoting product structure upgrades.
However, there are also objective risks and shortcomings. The beverage segment faces continuous pressure on some traditional categories; the incubation of new hit products comes with uncertainty; ongoing fierce competition may reignite price wars, forcing marketing expenses to rise, which would directly squeeze profit margins; and the slow pace of consumer recovery in China could delay the implementation of product upgrade strategies; fluctuations in raw material prices could also easily erode existing gross profit levels.
In light of this, GMTEight observes that the market has formed two starkly different views on Tingyi's investment value.
Looking back at the first half of 2026, Tingyi's stock price presented a fluctuating pattern overall. At the beginning of the year, the stock price surged; mid-year, it experienced a pullback due to changes in market expectations, with valuation repeatedly battling along with earnings expectations. The market had preemptively traded expectations for declining costs and profit recovery, but the continued lack of revenue growth has kept downward pressure on valuation.
Currently, bullish investors emphasize its stable profit cash flow, relatively low valuation in the Hong Kong consumer sector, and dividend attributes; while bearish investors are concerned about the revenue growth ceiling, the temporary nature of cost benefits, and the sustainability of profit improvements needing verification.
In summary, it is evident that as the consumption industry thoroughly departs from scale benefits and fully enters a new stage of quality-price competition in a saturated market, Tingyi's investment logic has clearly shifted: the industry is no longer competing for explosive growth but is testing operational stability. With solid channel barriers, dual main business hedging advantages, and refined cost management, the companys dual profit increase showcases the resilience of traditional consumption leaders across cycles. However, it cannot be ignored that category aging, consumer intermingling, uncertainty in new product iterations, cost cycle fluctuations, and weak revenue growth continually present core constraints on valuation breakthroughs.
In the future, the market's pricing of Tingyi will continue to depend on two core variables: firstly, how long the cost benefits can be sustained; and secondly, whether product upgrades can truly stimulate further revenue breakthroughs. Only when signals of an inflection point in revenue appear will the companys valuation hold the potential for full realization.
