On August 11, the three major A-share indices exhibited mixed results. The Shanghai Composite Index fluctuated and closed lower, while the ChiNext Index gained slightly against the trend. By the end of the trading day, the Shanghai Composite Index fell by 0.82% to 3,934.09 points; the Shenzhen Component Index dropped by 0.40% to 14,259.44 points; the ChiNext Index rose by 0.34% to 3,549.16 points; the STAR 50 Index declined by 1.63% to 1,709.50 points; and the BSE 50 Index fell by 0.86% to 1,113.22 points. The total trading volume of the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges was approximately 2.32 trillion yuan, a decrease of about 202.1 billion yuan compared to the previous trading day. Across the market, 1,615 stocks rose, 3,777 fell, and 150 remained unchanged, with a profitability rate of about 29%; there were 60 stocks hitting the daily limit up, while only 2 stocks hit the limit down. On the market, sectors such as MLCC concept stocks, CRO, film and television cinema chains, pharmaceutical commerce, communication equipment, and photovoltaic equipment saw significant gains; meanwhile, precious metals, industrial metals, minor metals, energy metals, and commercial aerospace saw notable declines. On the same day, three new stocks debuted on the A-share market: Ultra-pure Materials (301717.SZ) closed up 662.24% on its first trading day, ending at 503.00 yuan per share; Guoyi Company (688828.SH) rose 419.46%, closing at 110.23 yuan per share; and Jikai Biological (920165.BJ) gained 138.53%, finishing at 45.94 yuan per share.
Driving Factors
The market showed a clear divergence in indices on that day: the Shanghai Index, Shenzhen Component Index, and STAR 50 Index all closed lower, while only the ChiNext Index gained slightly, rising 0.34% due to the strength of the pharmaceutical and photovoltaic sectors. The trading volume in the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges was around 2.32 trillion yuan, a decrease of about 202.1 billion yuan from the previous day, with overall market profitability below 30%. A ratio of 60 stocks hitting the daily limit up compared to only 2 stocks hitting the limit down indicated a mild adjustment at the individual stock level, without panic selling. The MLCC sector continued to strengthen, with AI demand driving tight global supply of passive components. Some clients are willing to pay 2 to 3 times the original price to source components from manufacturers like Yageo and Murata, with major MLCC companies' capacity utilization rates nearing full capacity and lead times extended to 12 to 16 months for certain products. The summer box office catalyzed the film and cinema chains sector: as of August 11 at 11 a.m., the total box office for the summer season of 2026 (including pre-sales) reached 8.741 billion yuan, with single-day box office figures exceeding 100 million for 31 consecutive days since July 11; the film "Welcome to Dragon Restaurant," starring Shen Teng, officially premiered on August 11, receiving a score of 9.8 on Taopiaopiao, setting a record for the last three years. The metals sector opened high but closed lower: after a strong performance in the previous trading days, the precious metals sector saw a sharp decrease of 5.34% that day, with gold, copper, tungsten, and other sub-sectors also pulling back, resulting in industrial metals dropping by 4.84% and minor metals by 4.41%.
Hot Sectors
1. MLCC Concept: This sector continued to perform well, with Jiangsu Shuangxing Color Plastic New Materials, Zhejiang Jiemei Electronic And Technology, and Anhui Guofeng New Materials hitting the daily limit up, Dalian Dalicap Technology rising over 13%, and Guangdong Fenghua Advanced Technology up more than 6%. News-wise, the AI wave is driving a rapid increase in MLCC demand. To ensure stable supply of crucial materials, some clients are paying 2 to 3 times the original price to secure goods from major MLCC manufacturers like Yageo and Murata, creating a "highest bidder wins" atmosphere in the market, highlighting the ongoing tight supply of MLCCs. Industry analysts note that major MLCC manufacturers currently have ample orders, with capacity utilization close to full, and lead times for certain products extended to 12 to 16 months.
2. Film and Cinema Chains: This sector maintained its strength, with Beijing Jingxi Culture & Tourism hitting the limit up for two consecutive days, Zhejiang Huazhi Digital Media hitting the limit up at 20%, and Cultural Investment Holdings also closing up. News-wise, the summer box office has exceeded 100 million in daily earnings for 31 consecutive days since July 11; "Welcome to Dragon Restaurant" premiered on August 11 with a Taopiaopiao score of 9.8, setting a near three-year record, and multiple industry media predicted that the film's total box office would reach between 2.5 billion and 3.65 billion yuan. Christopher Nolan's new film "Odyssey" is set to premiere on August 14 (having already surpassed 1 billion USD in overseas box office), with institutions indicating that there is sufficient elasticity in summer box office earnings, suggesting continued recovery for sector valuation.
3. Innovative Drugs and Pharmaceutical Commerce: This sector was active again, with Xinjiang Bai Hua Cun Pharma Tech hitting the limit up for six consecutive days, Shanghai Kai Kai Industrial for four consecutive days, and stocks like Gan & Lee Pharmaceuticals, Harbin Pharmaceutical Group, Anhui Wanbang Pharmaceutical Technology (20%), LBX Pharmacy Chain Joint Stock, and Shanghai No.1 Pharmacy all hitting the limit up. News-wise, seven departments including the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Commerce issued a "Construction Plan for the Shanghai National Service Trade Innovation and Development Demonstration Zone," supporting the innovative development of the biopharmaceutical industry and supporting global registration and certification of innovative drugs, modern traditional Chinese medicine, and high-end medical devices developed by enterprises. Wind data shows that the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical sector has seen a net inflow of over 39.1 billion yuan from major funds over the past five trading days.
Adjustment Sectors
The precious metals sector fell by 5.34%, industrial metals dropped by 4.84%, and minor metals decreased by 4.41%, with the non-ferrous metals sector opening high but closing low overall. Chifeng Jilong Gold Mining and CMOC Group Limited fell over 7%, with Zijin Mining Group also declining. The commercial aerospace sector saw a broad decline, with China Spacesat falling over 8%. Additionally, the launch of the Blue Arrow Aerospace ZHUQUE-3 Remote II carrier rocket, originally scheduled for the morning of August 11, was postponed. These sectors had previously experienced significant gains and saw the largest declines on that day.
