Hong Kong: The total revenue of the restaurant industry in the second quarter is estimated to be HKD 27.2 billion, a year-on-year increase of 0.4%.
The provisional estimate of the total revenue of Hong Kong restaurants in the second quarter of 2026 is HKD 27.2 billion, an increase of 0.4% compared to the same period last year.
The Hong Kong government's Census and Statistics Department today (August 4) released the latest provisional figures for restaurant revenue and purchases. The estimated total revenue for restaurants in the second quarter of 2026 is valued at HKD 27.2 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 0.4%. During the same period, the provisional estimate of total purchases by restaurants is HKD 8.8 billion, which is a year-on-year increase of 2.5%. After adjusting for price changes, the provisional estimate of total restaurant revenue in terms of quantity for the second quarter of 2026 decreased by 0.4% compared to the same quarter last year.
In terms of categories, comparing the second quarter of 2026 with the second quarter of 2025, the total revenue of Chinese restaurants increased by 1.5% and 0.7% in value and quantity, respectively. Non-Chinese restaurants saw an increase of 1.6% and 1.0% in value and quantity, respectively. Fast food restaurants experienced a decrease of 1.5% and 2.5% in value and quantity, respectively. Bars recorded a decrease of 3.8% and 4.6% in value and quantity, respectively. As for other dining establishments, their total revenue fell by 2.7% and 3.6% in value and quantity, respectively.
When comparing the second quarter of 2026 with the previous quarter, the seasonally adjusted provisional estimate of total revenue from restaurants decreased by 0.5% in both value and quantity.
Comparing the first half of 2026 with the same period in 2025, total restaurant revenue increased by 0.8% in value, but decreased by 0.1% in quantity.
To facilitate further understanding of the short-term business performance of the catering industry, the Hong Kong government's Census and Statistics Department has also compiled statistical figures for individual months' restaurant revenue and purchases within the relevant quarters.
Analyzing by month, the provisional estimates for total restaurant revenue in April, May, and June 2026 compared to the same months last year respectively increased by 0.9%, 0.6%, and decreased by 0.5%.
After excluding the impact of price changes, the provisional estimates for total restaurant revenue in terms of quantity for April, May, and June 2026 compared with the same months last year respectively increased by 0.2%, decreased by 0.2%, and decreased by 1.3%.
A spokesperson for the Hong Kong government stated that recent restaurant business has been generally stable. Total revenue from restaurants in the second quarter increased by 0.4% year-on-year, while it increased by 0.8% in the first half of this year. Looking ahead, with the economy continuing to grow, local income increasing, and a stable rise in visitors to Hong Kong, it is expected to support the performance of the restaurant business. However, external uncertainties still pose downside risks. The government will continue to closely monitor the potential impact of changes in the external environment on restaurant business.
