The provisional estimate of the total retail sales value for June 2026 was HK$31.5 billion, an increase of 4.6% compared to the same month in 2025. The revised estimate for total retail sales value in May 2026 showed an increase of 7.9% compared to May 2025. Compared to the same period in 2025, the provisional estimate of total retail sales value for the first half of 2026 increased by 9.6%.
In June 2026, online sales accounted for 9.4% of the total retail sales value. The provisional estimate for the value of online retail sales for that month was HK$3 billion, up 11.6% compared to the same month in 2025. The revised estimate of online retail sales value for May 2026 showed an increase of 32.4% compared to May 2025. Compared to the same period in 2025, the provisional estimate of online retail sales value for the first half of 2026 increased by 27.7%.
After discounting for price changes, the provisional estimate of total retail sales volume in June 2026 increased by 2.3% compared to the same month in 2025. The revised estimate for total retail sales volume in May 2026 indicated an increase of 4.8% compared to May 2025. Compared to the same period in 2025, the provisional estimate of total retail sales volume for the first half of 2026 increased by 7.2%.
Analyzing the provisional estimate of sales value by major retail category from high to low, in June 2026 compared to June 2025, the sales value of jewelry, watches, and luxury gifts increased by 20.1%. This was followed by other unclassified consumer goods (sales value up 9.3%); food, alcoholic beverages, and tobacco (up 2.5%); clothing (up 0.8%); pharmaceuticals and cosmetics (up 0.6%); electrical appliances and other unclassified durable goods (up 11.3%); furniture and fixtures (up 5.1%); newspapers, stationery, and gifts (up 2.6%); and optical shops (up 2.1%).
On the other hand, in June 2026 compared to the same month in 2025, the sales value of supermarket goods declined by 1.1%. This was followed by department store goods (sales value down 4.2%); motor vehicles and parts (down 4.3%); fuel (down 15.3%); footwear, related products, and other clothing accessories (down 1.4%); and traditional Chinese medicine (down 4.9%).
Comparing the second quarter of 2026 to the first quarter, the seasonally adjusted provisional estimate of total retail sales value decreased by 3.0%, while the seasonally adjusted provisional estimate of total retail sales volume decreased by 2.6%.
A spokesperson for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government stated that the latest retail sales data indicates a sustained positive development momentum in the relevant industries. The total retail sales value recorded growth in June for the fourteenth consecutive month, rising by 4.6% year-on-year. Cumulatively, the total retail sales for the first half of this year increased by 9.6% compared to the same period last year.
The growth momentum is broadly distributed across multiple retail categories. With ongoing economic expansion, rising local income, and a stable increase in visitors to Hong Kong, it is expected to support the performance of the retail business. However, external uncertainties still pose downside risks. The Hong Kong Government will continue to closely monitor the potential impact of changes in the external environment on the local consumer market.
