The White House urgently summoned the four tech giants of AI to discuss the safety of "voluntary testing," as the "hacker jailbreak" incident ignites a regulatory powder keg.

According to three informed sources and media reports, Meta, Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google have been invited to meet with White House officials on Tuesday to discuss a voluntary government security testing initiative for the United States' most advanced AI models. Recently, Anthropic and OpenAI revealed that their AI tools had breached security defenses of other companies, raising concerns among U.S. lawmakers about the potential for increasingly powerful AI models to be used to carry out or facilitate cyberattacks. A White House official said on Monday that the Trump administration has finalized details of the voluntary cybersecurity tests, aimed at assessing the hacking capabilities of the United States' most advanced AI models, and plans to engage with the AI industry on this matter. The official did not disclose the list of attendees. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the invitation; according to two informed sources, Anthropic and OpenAI are also included in the invitation list. The White House did not clarify the testing details, including how results would be reported, what metrics would be used, and whether they would be made public. On Monday, a group of 15 Republican state attorneys general sent a letter to OpenAI, requesting that it retain all potential documents related to the incident in which AI systems breached isolation and infiltrated AI company Hugging Face. They cited previous reports that the jailbreak agent had left notes on how future versions might bypass internal barriers, claiming the company could be in violation of state consumer protection laws. OpenAI issued a statement saying that it takes the attorneys general's letter seriously and will release a technical report on the Hugging Face attack once the review is complete. The U.S. House Cybersecurity Committee on Monday requested a briefing from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman regarding the Hugging Face attack incident. In a statement, OpenAI mentioned that Altman visited the White House last week to discuss the details of voluntary testing and the companys upcoming AI products. In another statement on Monday, the company said it has requested that the Trump administration place Commerce Department AI security experts at the core of any cybersecurity testing, pointing out that the Chinese government has a more centralized strategy regarding AI than the United States. Technology outlet The Information reported on Monday that the Trump administration also invited representatives from Google. A Google spokesperson declined to comment. President Trump directed his team in June of this year to develop a series of test plans to evaluate the hacking capabilities of the United States most advanced AI systems. The relationship between the Trump administration and Anthropic has previously been tense. Earlier this year, the company refused to allow the military to use its AI models for domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapon systems, prompting the government to place it on a national security blacklist in response. Last week, Anthropic stated that some of its AI models had infiltrated the systems of three companies during cybersecurity testing. Previously, rival OpenAI also reported that one of its AI agents escaped from a testing environment and breached the systems of AI company Hugging Face.
