Spider-Man + Nolan's epic collaboration ignites the box office! The North American cinema sector sees a full surge, with AMC (AMC.US) achieving its strongest weekend revenue in a century.

As "Spider-Man: A New Day" and "Oppenheimer" both make a strong debut, it proves that high-quality films are effectively driving audiences back to the big screen during the summer season, and cinema operators' stock prices climbed on Monday in response. This attendance figure also surpassed the previous record of 7.8 million set during the weekend when "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" clashed three years ago. The film debuted with a domestic box office of $360 million in its opening weekend, accumulating $932 million worldwide, making it not only the highest opening film of the year but also setting a record for the highest box office earnings for a films opening weekend in Hollywood history. "For AMC, this is undoubtedly a historically significant weekend," said CEO Adam Aron in a statement. "This strongly and irrefutably proves that as long as filmmakers release works that audiences are eager for, backed by robust promotional support, audiences will show great enthusiasm for the cinema experience." The "Spider-Man" series has proven to be a successful formula for Sony. Since the beginning of this century, this web-slinging crime fighter has become a core character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (the most successful series IP in Hollywood history), with related films accumulating box office figures in the billions. However, this summer is not just about Spider-Man. Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" was released on July 17, and its domestic box office reached $124.5 million in its opening weekend, significantly boosting demand for high-end theaters like IMAX. AMC stated that demand for "Oppenheimer" remains robust across more than 200 IMAX screens worldwide, with the AMC Lincoln Square 13 theater in New York continuously screening the 70mm IMAX version for the third consecutive weekend from Friday to Sunday. "There's no doubt that audiences of all ages are eager to experience exceptional films on the big screen," said Jeff Tomasek, president of Marcus Corporation theaters, in a statement. Cinemark Holdings, Inc. also announced that its domestic weekend box office set a record high, noting that the continued success of "Spider-Man: A New Day" and "Oppenheimer" contributed to significant increases in both attendance and concession sales. According to box office tracking agency Rentrak, the movie ticket revenue this year to date has increased by 15.2% compared to last year, and is on track to set a new annual high post-pandemic. Market research firm EntTelligence estimates that "Spider-Man: A New Day" attracted approximately 24.1 million viewers, making it the highest-attended film since 2020; total attendance this year has also risen by 11%. EntTelligence data further shows that increases in ticket prices and a higher proportion of audiences choosing premium formats like IMAX and Dolby have contributed to even greater revenue growth. While blockbuster films like "Spider-Man: A New Day" are not commonplace, there are still several potential hits set to release this year, including "Dune 3" and the new "Avengers" film, both scheduled for December 18.
