From the perspective of performance breakdown, signals of the reversal of China Shenhua's cycle have gradually emerged.
On July 14th, "Coal King" China Shenhua Energy disclosed its performance forecast for the first half of the year: it is expected that the net profit attributable to parent company will be between 26.3 billion yuan and 29.8 billion yuan, an increase of 6.9% to 21.1% year-on-year, significantly exceeding Morgan Stanley's expectation of 26 billion yuan; the non-GAAP net profit is expected to be between 26.1 billion yuan and 28.1 billion yuan, an increase of 7.4% to 15.6% year-on-year. After the performance announcement, the Hong Kong stock China Shenhua Energy (01088) rose by nearly 3% during trading hours. By the closing on July 23rd, the stock had risen by over 6% in just 8 trading days, showing strength against the overall weak market sentiment. However, there are significant market divergences - with rising and falling coal prices in the first half of the year, weakening daily power consumption during the rainy season, rising port inventories, and concerns about downward pressure on annual profits, the market remains cautious. On the other hand, the company's fundamentals have improved significantly, with the completion of the year-long, 133.598 billion yuan asset restructuring and the integration of the coal-electricity-ship-chemical industry chain, allowing Shenhua to emerge from the downturn of consecutive three years of mid-term net profit decline from 2023 to 2025. As a coal giant that has seen declining net profits for three consecutive years, achieving an increase of over 20% in its first half-year performance after completing the 133.5 billion asset acquisition, there is a need for the market to re-evaluate not only the flexibility of its performance, but also the new direction of this "coal-electricity integration" giant ship. With performance cycle reversal, the trillion-dollar restructuring has opened up a growth ceiling. Splitting the performance, the signal of China Shenhua Energy's cyclical reversal has gradually emerged. In the first quarter of 2026, due to three factors, China Shenhua Energy's profitability weakened temporarily. During the period, the company achieved operating income of 70.397 billion yuan, an increase of 1.17% year-on-year, with a net profit attributable to the parent company of only 10.667 billion yuan, a decrease of 10.73% year-on-year. The three main reasons for the profit decline in Q1 are: the rise in coal spot prices did not transmit to the company's coal prices as expected (actual average selling price of 487 yuan/ton, lower than the expected 502 yuan/ton); coal sales volume was lower than expected, and investment income from joint venture enterprises decreased by 62.2% year-on-year. Looking at the business structure, GMTEight observes that coal is still the foundation of China Shenhua Energy, with short-term volume and price pressures still present. In the first quarter of 2026, the company's coal segment revenue increased slightly by 0.2% year-on-year, mainly due to a 21.2% increase in sales volume of externally purchased coal; however, gross profit and total profit decreased by 9.4% and 12.2% respectively. The power sector is the core hedge against the cycle, with power generation business revenue in 2025 reaching 82.708 billion yuan, accounting for 28.04% of total revenue, becoming the second largest source of income after coal. The integration synergy logic was fully verified in the first quarter report: the average domestic electricity selling price decreased by 3.1% year-on-year, but the total electricity sales increased by 11%, relying on its own coal mine to reduce coal-fired costs, and unit electricity sales costs decreased by 4.4%, with a gross profit increase of 9.6% in the power generation sector. At that time, the market's full-year profit expectations for China Shenhua Energy were conservative. However, the company's growth turning point has been confirmed based on the second quarter's better-than-expected performance. Specifically, in the first half of the year, China Shenhua Energy's net profit center is around 28.05 billion yuan. Excluding the 10.67 billion yuan from Q1, the net profit for Q2 is expected to be between 15.6 billion and 19.1 billion yuan, a quarter-on-quarter increase of 46% to 79%. Morgan Stanley pointed out that the company's first-half performance exceeded their expectation of 26 billion yuan, with a year-on-year net profit increase of 23% to 51% in Q2. The Q2 performance exceeding expectations mainly reflected the higher coal prices compared to the same period last year (especially in the second quarter), as well as increased profits from coal chemical, railways, and port businesses. The first quarter's "pressure test" did not hit the company's profit bottom, and the second quarter's "rebound confirmation" undoubtedly proved the resilience of China Shenhua Energy's coal-electricity integration against the cycle. It is worth noting that with the injection of over a trillion yuan in assets, China Shenhua Energy is transitioning from "internal growth" to "external expansion," opening up long-term growth opportunities. In the first half of 2026, China Shenhua Energy completed the acquisition of 12 core enterprises of its controlling shareholder, the National Energy Group, valued at 133.598 billion yuan. Except for Shanxi Jinshen Energy Co., Ltd., the other 11 target companies were included in the company's financial statements. This transaction set a record for the largest issuance of shares for asset purchases in A-share history. After the asset injection, the company's resource endowment underwent a qualitative change - with the company's coal resources, coal reserves, coal production, power generation capacity, and polyolefin production reaching 684.9 billion tons, 345 billion tons, 5.12 billion tons, 60.9 GW, and 1.88 million tons respectively, an increase of 64.7%, 97.8%, 56.6%, 27.8%, and 213.3% compared to before the transaction, further enhancing its integrated scale advantage. The company then significantly raised its operating targets for 2026: the target for coal production was raised by 55.5% to 513 million tons, coal sales volume was raised by 42.1% to 618 million tons, and power generation was raised by 28.8% to 288.1 billion kWh. Capital expenditure plans were also raised by 47.2% to 56 billion yuan, with power generation and coal chemical industry increasing by 71.5% and 120.5% respectively. The company's full-year operating income target for 2026 is 360 billion yuan, reaching a new level compared to 2025. If the previous Shenhua was a giant ship sailing steadily on established routes, the post-asset-injection Shenhua has upgraded to a ship with a more powerful engine, sailing into broader waters. As the power coal enters a weak balance cycle, the valuation spring is yet to release. From an industry perspective, in the fluctuating coal price cycle, the long-term contract mechanism may be the core trump card for China Shenhua Energy to cross the cycle. According to data from CCTD China Coal Market Network, the central price of thermal coal increased significantly in the first half of 2026, with the spot price of 5500 kcal from the Bohai Rim at 842 yuan/ton at the end of June, up by 22.74% from the beginning of the year. However, the rainy season's rainfall affecting daily power consumption, as well as rising port inventories, have led to a temporary drop in coal prices, breeding pessimism in the market. The supply-demand constraints clearly reflect a long-term weak balance trend: domestic raw coal production is shrinking year-on-year, safety supervision is suppressing new supply, and imported coal cannot fully replace high-calorific domestic coal. Morgan Stanley pointed out that after the end of the rainy season, the high-temperature peak season will come, with power plants concentrated in replenishing inventory to support coal prices, making the company's profits in the third quarter likely to remain stable. Within this context, the long-term contract mechanism helps to build a profit safety net for Shenhua - according to a Zhongtai research report, in the first half of 2026, the average price of long-term contracts for 5500 kcal from Qinhuangdao was only 686 yuan/ton, with only a 1% year-on-year increase; long-term contracts account for over 80% of the company's coal. While the elasticity of price increases is not as great as pure spot coal enterprises when prices rise, the company can firmly maintain its profit bottom line during downward cycles. This characteristic also makes China Shenhua Energy quite resilient in the fluctuating coal sector in the first half of 2026. As thermal coal prices fluctuated and fell in the first half of the year, the overall coal sector experienced a weak shake-up, but compared to pure coal mining companies, China Shenhua Energy's stock price fell significantly less in the first half of the year, with its H-shares rising by over 17% since the beginning of the year, showing clear characteristics of capital hedging and confirming the anti-fall attribute of its integrated assets. Relying on long-term contracts to build a profit moat, Shenhua has strong confidence in overcoming the cycle. From a capital market perspective, China Shenhua Energy has both defensive and growth valuation logics, which is gradually opening up the space for valuation repair. On the one hand, there is the defensive logic, whereby a high dividend payout commitment supports the valuation bottom. The company maintains a long-term commitment to a dividend rate of no less than 65%, providing a stable and sustainable cash dividend that forms a solid valuation safety margin. Even if coal prices fall in the short term, stable dividend income can hedge against stock price fluctuations, making it suitable for a stable core asset allocation. On the other hand, there is the growth logic, where the trillion-dollar restructuring brings growth revaluation opportunities. The traditional market defines Shenhua as a mature cyclical blue-chip stock with a long-term low valuation center; however, after the asset injection, the company has experienced a significant growth in coal, electricity, and coal chemical production capacity. It has transitioned from being a mature cash cow to a target with both "dividends + growth" attributes, with valuation repair potential. However, it is important to note that while China Shenhua Energy is a relatively stable target in the fluctuating coal sector, there are still hidden concerns from the industry and fundamentals. For example, a long-term downward trend in coal prices may lead to a systematic shift in the valuation system within the cyclical sector; the 56 billion yuan annual capital expenditure plan will put pressure on free cash flow, limiting dividend growth; and the integration of assets, from management coordination to profit realization, will still take time to be verified. In conclusion, China Shenhua Energy has proclaimed its crossing of the cyclical trough with an outstanding half-year report - the long-term contract mechanism constructs a solid profit bottom, the trillion-dollar restructuring opens up a growth path, and the 65% dividend commitment anchors the valuation floor. With these three forces at play, this "coal-electricity integration" giant ship is recalibrating the market's understanding. However, every coin has another side. If the long-term central coal price continues to decline, the cyclical sector's valuation system may face a systematic shift; the 560 billion yuan annual capital expenditure plan will squeeze free cash flow, limiting dividend growth potential; and the integration of over a trillion yuan in assets, from management coordination to profit realization, will still need time for validation.
