On July 23, the wholly-owned subsidiary of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, announced that the Malaysia Stock Exchange has been added as a recognized securities exchange.
On July 23, HKEX's wholly owned subsidiary, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, announced that it has added Bursa Malaysia as a recognized stock exchange. In the future, companies listed on the main market of Bursa Malaysia can apply for a secondary listing in Hong Kong. With this addition, the number of recognized stock exchanges in Southeast Asia will increase to four, with the other three being the Indonesia Stock Exchange, Singapore Exchange, and the Stock Exchange of Thailand. HKEX signed a cooperation memorandum with Bursa Malaysia earlier this year, and the addition of Bursa Malaysia as a recognized stock exchange reflects the commitment of both parties to strengthen market connectivity and provide more cross-border investment opportunities for issuers and investors. In addition, today the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong and the Securities Commission of Malaysia signed another memorandum of cooperation in Kuala Lumpur, aiming to deepen the connectivity between the two markets. Charles Li, CEO of HKEX, expressed his pleasure in adding Bursa Malaysia to the list of recognized stock exchanges of HKEX, marking the joint efforts of the two exchanges to promote regional market connectivity, facilitate the participation of global investors in Asian markets, and create more efficient financing channels for issuers and investors. Malaysia is one of the most vibrant and internationally connected economies in Southeast Asia, while Hong Kong is a leading international financial center in Asia and a gateway to opportunities in mainland China. By creating more efficient financing channels for issuers and investors, it is hoped that the two markets will see bilateral flow in terms of capital, ideas, and opportunities. Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, CEO of Bursa Malaysia, welcomed HKEX's recognition of Bursa Malaysia as a recognized stock exchange. This move will create new opportunities for Malaysian listed companies to expand their international investor base and access a more diverse range of capital sources through a secondary listing in Hong Kong. This recognition is an important milestone in the deepening cooperation between Bursa Malaysia and HKEX following the signing of the cooperation memorandum earlier this year, reflecting confidence in Malaysia's regulatory standards, market infrastructure, and corporate governance framework, as well as the joint commitment of both parties to enhance market connectivity and promote regional connectivity. Bursa Malaysia becomes the 21st overseas stock exchange recognized by HKEX, expanding the list of recognized stock exchanges to 19 countries worldwide and further strengthening HKEX's global network to enhance connectivity with major growth markets.
