Houthi rebels claim attack on two Saudi oil tankers, warning of larger attacks on Saudi territory. The Houthi rebels in Yemen issued a statement on the 23rd claiming that in response to what they described as a Saudi blockade on Yemen and to implement their "blockade in response to blockade" action principle, they launched military strikes on two Saudi oil tankers. The statement stated that the attacked vessels were the "ENCELIA" and "LAYLA," which violated the Houthi rebels' previous ban on commercial shipping in the Red Sea. The rebels used ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones to attack the two oil tankers, causing fires on both ships. The statement also said that the rebels forced about 10 ships to turn back. The rebels stated that they would continue to conduct maritime military operations against Saudi Arabia and continue to implement the so-called "blockade in response to blockade" measures. The statement also warned that if Saudi Arabia launches new military operations against Yemen, the Houthi rebels will launch larger attacks on targets within Saudi territory.
Trump: Federal government expected to "shut down" in September. On July 22nd, local time, U.S. President Trump mentioned during a speech in Georgia that due to disagreements between Republicans and Democrats on spending priorities, a federal government "shutdown" is expected in September. On July 21st, the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed a short-term funding bill that would provide funding for federal government agencies until December 4th, to avoid a "shutdown" due to depleted funds before the midterm elections in November. This temporary funding measure, also known as a "continuing resolution," will be submitted to the Senate for consideration. Currently, Senate Republican leaders are negotiating with Democrats and considering proposing their own short-term funding plan. If Congress fails to pass a funding bill in time, the majority of federal government agencies and projects' funding will expire at midnight on September 30th, the end of the fiscal year.
OpenAI raises cloud service spending forecast to $700 billion, invests $30 billion in building data centers. According to reports, OpenAI is expanding the scale of its data centers and increasing its spending budget in the field. OpenAI has raised its spending forecast for computing power to around $750 billion by 2030, up from around $600 billion earlier this year. This increase reflects OpenAI's new agreements with cloud computing service providers to rapidly acquire the massive computing power needed to develop and run AI models. OpenAI announced on Wednesday that it will invest $20 billion to launch the "Camellia" data center project in Effingham County, Georgia. OpenAI's Chief Computing Officer Sachin Katki stated that the company has signed a contract with Georgia Power to obtain 3.2 gigawatts of power supply between 2028 and 2032, with the project expected to cost over $30 billion. This may make the facility one of the largest data centers ever built by OpenAI. It was reported that OpenAI has hired Brent Mayo to help ensure that the data center project progresses as planned; he is one of the main architects of Musk's data center construction projects.
Redfin: AI data centers have become a concern for potential home buyers. Real estate brokerage company Redfin stated that over half (53%) of Americans oppose the construction of AI data centers in their communities. About one-third (34%) expressed support. AI data centers are controversial largely due to reports that they consume a large amount of water and electricity resources, which could push up energy costs and raise environmental concerns. They can also disrupt the community environment with noise and the appearance of large industrial buildings. For some, AI data centers also represent broader concerns about AI: 58% of Americans believe that advancements in AI will eliminate job opportunities and make it more difficult for people to afford housing. Real estate agents note that concerns about nearby data centers are becoming more common among home buyers. The older generation is more likely to oppose the construction of data centers in their areas.
