On Tuesday, the nonferrous metal sector rose across the board, with Century Aluminum Company (CENX.US) up over 6%, Southern Copper Corporation (SCCO.US) and Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FCX.US) up over 4%, BHP Group Ltd Sponsored American Depositary Receipt Repr 2 Shs (BHP.US) up over 2%, and Rio Tinto plc Sponsored ADR (RIO.US) up over 1%. On the news front, the White House announced on July 20th that U.S. President Trump signed a proclamation that day, providing tariff exemptions for companies investing in primary aluminum production projects in the United States under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. The announcement stated that the U.S. Department of Commerce will establish a mechanism to encourage investment in the construction, expansion, or renovation of aluminum smelting plants in the U.S. Projects meeting the requirements will need to commit to starting construction by January 20, 2029. The U.S. Department of Commerce will allow companies with eligible projects to import the same amount of primary aluminum as the expected annual output of the new project each year, and pay half of the import tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.
