Ukrainians Protest Government Shake-Up After Zelenskyy Replaces Defense Minister
Thousands of protesters gathered in Kyiv on Thursday following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's decision to dismiss Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov as part of a broad government reshuffle. Demonstrators waved Ukrainian and European Union flags while calling for Fedorov's return, reflecting growing public dissatisfaction with the latest leadership changes. Reports indicated that protesters chanted slogans criticizing the government's decision, although those accounts could not be independently verified.
Fedorov confirmed his dismissal in a social media post on Wednesday, describing it as a privilege to have served the country. During his six-month tenure, he highlighted several achievements, including disrupting Starlink access for Russian forces, increasing pressure on occupied Crimea, and implementing significant reforms within Ukraine's military structure.
The reshuffle extends beyond the defense ministry. Ukraine's parliament accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko after just one year in office, while President Zelenskyy nominated Naftogaz CEO Serhiy Koretsky to become the country's next prime minister. According to parliamentary officials, the incoming government will prioritize preparations for the coming winter and efforts to support negotiations toward a potential ceasefire.
The leadership changes have drawn criticism from civil society groups and prominent public figures. War veteran Dmytro Koziatynskyi urged citizens to demonstrate against what he described as a pattern of replacing effective ministers with politically convenient appointments. Anti-corruption campaigners, including representatives from Kyiv-based watchdog organizations, also voiced support for the protests.
The political upheaval comes despite Ukraine's growing success in expanding its drone warfare capabilities. Over the past four years, Kyiv has significantly increased domestic drone production and intensified long-range strikes against Russian military facilities and energy infrastructure. Defense analysts have credited these operations with helping slow Russia's military advances while simultaneously increasing the strategic and economic pressure on Moscow.
Zelenskyy announced earlier this week that Ukraine was entering a new phase of its political strategy, stating that each major area of foreign policy would be assigned to experienced officials capable of implementing decisions reached with international partners. The latest cabinet overhaul marks Ukraine's fourth major government reshuffle since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, underscoring the leadership adjustments taking place as the conflict enters another critical stage.
