SpaceXAI (SPCX.US) has launched a new artificial intelligence model developed in collaboration with AI programming startup Cursor, aimed at handling financial, legal, and programming tasks more proficiently. This move is part of Elon Musk's company's intention to gain an advantage in competition with rivals such as Anthropic PBC and OpenAI. The software, named Grok 4.5, marks the first joint AI model developed by the two companies. Just a few weeks ago, SpaceX agreed to acquire Cursor, valuing the startup at $60 billion. According to a blog post released on Wednesday, this new model is intended to "handle difficult and time-consuming tasks," including software engineering, which is a core area of focus for many top AI developers. However, unlike Cursor's previous models, Grok 4.5 is designed to address a wider range of work combinations, such as legal and financial services. The blog post also states that Grok 4.5 enhances network security capabilities. The collaboration with Cursor is part of Musk's company's broader efforts to catch up in the AI race and attract more corporate clients. Musk had earlier stated that his AI startup (previously known as xAI before merging with SpaceX) was lagging behind in programming, prompting a wave of personnel adjustments to rebuild the company. The AI team, now known as SpaceXAI, released their first programming agent in May to compete with Anthropic's product. Ahead of the long-awaited IPO, SpaceX announced a deal that gives them the right to acquire Cursor - one of the fastest-growing startups and a key player in the era of "vibe coding". The two companies then began to collaborate on developing a new model through sharing data and computing resources. The company has also been focusing on financial work in an attempt to win over Wall Street clients as a further effort to increase revenue. The release of Grok 4.5 comes at a time when the government is intensifying scrutiny of new models, especially in terms of network security capabilities. The Trump administration had briefly imposed restrictions on Anthropic's most powerful models for overseas access and had asked OpenAI to stagger the release of their latest products. Both companies have since stated that they have obtained permission to proceed with their releases. In the blog post, Cursor stated that they have taken measures to "detect and prevent malicious actors". The company's goal is to "maintain secure and lawful work, including identifying and fixing vulnerabilities while limiting workflows that are most likely to cause harm".
