From "disclaimer of responsibility" to "full responsibility commitment", BYD has set a new starting line for the intelligent driving industry.
The popularization of advanced intelligent driving accelerates, and "Who pays for intelligent driving accidents" is the issue that users are most concerned about. Currently, there are two types of security solutions in the market: one is third-party paid intelligent driving insurance, and the other is vehicle manufacturers such as BYD Company Limited (01211) providing free coverage. The difference between the two models directly affects the car owners' cost of vehicle use, reflecting a deep-seated change in the division of responsibility in the intelligent automotive industry. In terms of the cost of vehicle use, intelligent driving insurance is a third-party commercial value-added product that car owners need to purchase at their own expense, resulting in sustained additional expenditures. BYD Company Limited's intelligent parking coverage is a lifetime equity for vehicle purchase, offering free access to City Navigation Facing the Eyes of the Sky A and B versions for new and existing car owners for one year without additional fees. In terms of compensation rules, mainstream intelligent driving insurance policies typically set fixed compensation limits. In the event of accidents such as collisions with luxury vehicles or major personal injuries, any vehicle damage, personal injury, or property loss beyond the coverage amount will be the responsibility of the car owner, with most products only covering the difference in insurance premium. BYD Company Limited's coverage has no limit on compensation amounts, with the economic losses attributable to the intelligent driving system as determined by authoritative appraisal being borne by the vehicle manufacturer. In addition, car owners often overlook the hidden costs that accidents can bring. Filing claims through intelligent driving insurance will be recorded in the car owner's insurance records, leading to higher premiums the following year. Multiple claims could also result in higher insurance rates and narrower coverage limits. BYD Company Limited clearly defines the boundaries of rights and responsibilities: in the event of accidents caused by the intelligent driving system, the claims process is independent of the car owner's personal insurance, and premiums for the following year will not increase. The core difference between these two types of solutions lies in the different entities responsible for bearing the risks. Intelligent driving insurance is funded by third-party insurance companies for compensation, with vehicle manufacturers not bearing the core responsibility. Due to the lack of support from intelligent driving algorithms and operational data, disputes over claims can easily arise in complex situations. BYD Company Limited takes on full responsibility for its coverage, directly facing the risks of developing its own technology and assuming the cost of compensation, thereby solving the industry's challenge of unclear "rights and responsibilities" and ensuring a better experience for users of intelligent travel. BYD Company Limited's willingness to take on full responsibility is rooted in its end-to-end self-developed system and accumulation of large-scale data. According to BYD Company Limited chairman Wang Chuanfu at the Intelligentization Strategy Conference, BYD Company Limited currently has a fleet of over 3.15 million assisted driving vehicles, with daily data of 200 million kilometers driven, backed by a smart driving research and development team of over 5,000 people, forming a positive loop of "data-algorithm-iteration". After the launch of the intelligent parking coverage, usage rates rose to 93% and accident rates were almost zero, providing further validation of the technology's reliability and forming the underlying support for this policy. It is worth noting that this coverage mechanism is restructuring the competition logic in the intelligent driving industry, shifting the focus from hardware parameters to responsibility and security. Market feedback shows that the flagship model Tang EV has surpassed 150,000 pre-orders as of June 17, with all models equipped with the Eyes of the Sky B auxiliary driving laser version and Eyes of the Sky 5.0 system, concurrently enjoying City Navigation and Intelligent Parking coverage rights, directly confirming consumer acceptance of the "high-standard intelligent driving + vehicle manufacturer coverage" model. For long-term development, paid intelligent driving insurance is only a transitional solution, while the proactive coverage model taken by vehicle manufacturers is the core foundation for the extensive implementation of advanced intelligent driving. In the future, the vehicle manufacturer's responsibility for intelligent driving will gradually become a core decision-making criterion for consumers' vehicle purchases and a key indicator of the industry's maturity.
