Due to its ambitious goal of turning Starlink into an interconnected platform that provides broadband, mobile network, and a hybrid network of satellite and ground, its parent company SpaceX may seek to acquire T-Mobile.
It is noted that due to ambitions to make Starlink a platform that provides broadband, mobile networks, and a hybrid network of satellites and ground, its parent company SpaceX (SPCX.US) may seek to acquire T-Mobile (TMUS.US). TD Cowen analyst Gregory Williams said, "If SpaceX cannot reach a wholesale network agreement, or simply wants to quickly gain the economic benefits of ownership, then given T-Mobile's momentum, independent culture, pure wireless service provider identity, and existing Starlink partnership, in our view it is obviously the best choice." Starlink is currently exploring partnerships with the three major telecom operators (AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile) to gather spectrum resources to expand capacity, and to develop satellite-based "phone-to-satellite direct" technology to eliminate signal blind spots in rural areas. However, to provide ground and satellite-based wireless services, it needs to lease network capacity wholesale from one of the three major operators. Regarding the potential acquisition of a wireless business, Williams pointed out, "SpaceX will need a willing seller. As T-Mobile is the most suitable choice, this dynamic factor brought by SpaceX may be the driving force for T-Mobile owner Deutsche Telekom to seek complete ownership and control of its American 'cash cow' subsidiary." The potential prospect of SpaceX acquiring T-Mobile has led to a slight uptick in the telecom sector at the opening of trading on Thursday.
