Well-known whistleblower: Apple Inc. (AAPL.US) will launch the second generation of iPhone Air in the Spring of 2027 to address the two major issues of single camera and battery life.
Apple is preparing to launch the second generation of iPhone Air in the spring of 2027, aiming to enhance the appeal of this slim and light device.
Renowned Apple Inc. (AAPL.US) whistleblower Mark Gurman released an article stating that Apple Inc. is preparing to launch the second generation of the iPhone Air in the spring of 2027, aiming to enhance the appeal of this lightweight device.
Gurman cited informed sources reporting that the prototype of this new model, codenamed V62, has added a rear camera for ultra-wide-angle photography. Currently, this model is undergoing advanced testing within Apple Inc.
Sources disclosed that although the appearance of this device remains unchanged, Apple Inc. is also working to improve the battery life. It is not clear whether this improvement comes from a larger capacity battery - which may not be realistic in the compact body of the Air - or through increasing energy efficiency.
The Air model was first released in September 2025 as part of Apple Inc.'s strategy to expand its $210 billion iPhone business by introducing new designs. It is reported that Apple Inc. plans to launch its first foldable smartphone later this year, and is planning to release an iPhone 20th Anniversary Edition in 2027, which will feature a brand new four-sided curved edge-to-edge screen.
Gurman pointed out that if the new Apple Inc. Air is released in the spring, there will be a gap of about a year and a half between the first and second generation products. However, the release time and specifications of the product may still change. An Apple Inc. company spokesperson declined to comment.
As part of the changes, Apple Inc. is adjusting its release schedule. The company typically releases all major iPhone models simultaneously in September. However, this year, the fall product lineup will only include high-end models: iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and a new foldable screen smartphone.
Apple Inc. plans to release a new standard iPhone - iPhone 18 - approximately six months later, along with an update to Air. Earlier this week, media reported that two 20th Anniversary Edition iPhones will be released in the fall of the same year, along with the second generation foldable screen smartphone.
The new Air will be equipped with the A20 Pro processor, which will also be used in the iPhone set to be released later this fall.
Apple Inc. believes that the camera system and battery life are two key opportunities to enhance the performance of Air. Sources revealed that the performance of the single camera is currently insufficient and a common complaint among consumers.
The starting price of the iPhone Air released by Apple Inc. last year was $999, featuring one of the thinnest designs in the smartphone industry. However, this slim design struggles to accommodate the technology found in Apple Inc.'s Pro series models.
Despite this, Air still plays an important role in Apple Inc.'s product line. Not all consumers need all the features and characteristics of the Pro models; they may value portability and stylish design more. Incoming CEO John Ternus stated that Air contributes to differentiating Apple Inc.'s product line.
Apple Inc.'s attempts to launch iPhones in different sizes have not always been smooth. The previous mini and Plus models had mediocre sales. Although the sales of Air have improved compared to the previous generation, it has not yet made it to the top of the iPhone sales chart. This is also one of the reasons why it is taking a bit longer for Apple Inc. to release the second generation product.
Apple Inc.'s staggered release strategy for iPhones also helps to distribute revenue more evenly throughout the calendar year. This move also helps Apple Inc. better compete with rivals such as Samsung Electronics, who release multiple flagship smartphones at various points throughout the year.
