Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN.US) announced on Monday its plans to invest billions of dollars in building a new data center campus in Montgomery County, Missouri, to further expand its artificial intelligence and cloud computing operations.
The project will involve the construction of a new dedicated campus, creating over 400 full-time jobs as well as thousands of construction jobs, including roadways, water systems, and digital communication facilities.
Amazon.com, Inc. has committed to investing over $7 million for community development, including $3 million for emergency dispatch facilities, $1 million for community spaces, and grants to local projects and education through ChangeX.
The campus will use 138 megawatts of carbon-free energy, enough to power around 28,000 households, and will utilize high-efficiency "free air cooling" technology, consuming water resources only 7% of the year.
Amazon.com, Inc. is also partnering with Arable Labs to improve irrigation efficiency for farmers, aiming to save approximately 100 million gallons of water per year.
Local officials anticipate the project will generate hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenue, compared to less than $9,000 in tax revenue from the land previously.
This announcement comes at a time when global spending on artificial intelligence is significantly increasing. Amazon.com, Inc. has announced a nearly $200 billion capital expenditure plan for 2026, while global cloud service companies such as Alphabet (GOOGL.US), Microsoft Corporation (MSFT.US), and Meta (META.US) have collectively spent close to $700 billion on artificial intelligence infrastructure.
