Chen Meibao: The Hong Kong government will continue to optimize the "Hong Kong vehicles heading north" program and steadily expand the "Guangdong vehicles heading south" program in an orderly manner.
Chen Meibao continued to say that the SAR government will integrate experience, maintain communication with the Guangdong provincial government, continue to optimize the northbound travel of Hong Kong vehicles, and expand the southbound travel of Guangdong vehicles in a steady and orderly manner to achieve cultural integration, economic win-win situation, and shared opportunities.
On June 15, the Director of the Hong Kong Transport and Logistics Bureau, Chen Meibao, made an opening speech at the Legislative Council's Transport Panel on the "Hong Kong Cars Going North" and "Guangdong Cars Going South". She stated that the Special Administrative Region Government has always upheld innovative policies and considered the effective use of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge as one of the important strategic directions for deepening the development of the Greater Bay Area. Working with the Guangdong Provincial Government to promote various measures for Global Top E-Commerce, the government hopes to promote the movement of Hong Kong cars going north and Guangdong cars going south through the bridge, allowing residents from both areas to travel in both directions, reflecting deep connectivity within the Greater Bay Area.
Firstly, concerning the movement of Hong Kong cars going north, the plan, implemented since mid-2023, has reached its third anniversary and has been widely welcomed by citizens. Over 140,000 Hong Kong private cars have participated in the plan, leading to a continuous increase in the usage of the bridge. In May 2026, the total bi-directional traffic flow on the bridge reached approximately 530,000 vehicle trips, with an average of 17,000 trips per day, representing an increase of about 17% compared to the same period in 2025. Hong Kong cars going north accounted for about 40% of the daily bridge traffic.
The plan for Guangdong cars going south has been implemented for half a year, and overall operations have been orderly and smooth, with increasing numbers of applications and reservations for travel. As of the end of May this year, about 8,400 applications for entry into the urban area have been approved, with a total of approximately 6,700 reserved trips. During the May mainland Labor Day Golden Week, reservations exceeded two to three times the usual amount. Additionally, the EasyPark Fly service at the border parking lot has received over 8,600 user applications and over 4,000 reserved trips, and it is believed that these numbers will continue to rise.
Chen Meibao further stated that the SAR Government will draw on experience, communicate with the Guangdong Provincial Government, and continue to optimize Hong Kong cars going north while steadily and orderly expanding Guangdong cars going south, aiming to achieve cultural integration, economic win-win, and shared opportunities within the Greater Bay Area.
Thank you.
