Hong Kong Retail Revenues Expand 8.6% in April Amid Influx of Global Visitors
Hong Kong’s retail sector has extended its growth trajectory for a twelfth consecutive month, recording an 8.6 percent year-on-year increase in retail sales for April. According to provisional data released by the Census and Statistics Department, retail revenue reached HK$31.4 billion (approximately US$4 billion), up from HK$28.9 billion during the same period in the prior year. This performance contributes to a cumulative 11.3 percent expansion in retail sales during the first four months of 2026 compared to the corresponding period last year, demonstrating a sustained economic recovery fueled by a revival in inbound tourism and robust festive expenditures.
An official government representative highlighted that the upward momentum was broad-based, spanning the majority of major retail categories. Looking forward, the administration expects the retail industry to maintain this positive trajectory, supported by ongoing domestic economic expansion, a substantial influx of international visitors, and stable consumer confidence. However, officials also emphasized the necessity of remaining vigilant against potential macroeconomic vulnerabilities arising from shifting global geopolitical tensions.
Sector-specific data revealed varied performance across different retail segments. The automotive industry experienced the most pronounced growth, with sales of motor vehicles and corresponding parts surging by 46.1 percent. Significant gains were also observed in electrical appliances and other consumer durables, which climbed by 21.9 percent, while the luxury sector—encompassing jewelry, timepieces, clocks, and high-value gifts—registered a 19.8 percent increase. Furthermore, general consumer goods witnessed a 14.2 percent rise. Conversely, certain sectors faced contractions; department store sales diminished by 6.7 percent, Chinese medicinal products and herbs decreased by 8.5 percent, and fuel revenues experienced an 11.7 percent decline relative to the previous year.
This retail expansion correlates closely with a notable surge in tourism. The Hong Kong Tourism Board reported approximately 4.22 million visitor arrivals in April, representing a 10 percent year-on-year increase. This growth was partially stimulated by high-profile international events, such as the Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament, which helped drive a 20 percent increase in travelers from long-haul markets. Cumulatively, total visitor arrivals for the first four months of 2026 reached 18.52 million, marking a 15 percent escalation from the previous year. Mainland Chinese tourists remained the primary driver of this influx, constituting over 14 million of the total arrivals during the four-month period.
