After completing a new round of $6.5 billion in financing, Anthropic's valuation soared to $96.5 billion, surpassing its rival OpenAI for the first time in paper value. At the same time, the company announced that it would "move forward quickly" on previously restricted cybersecurity models that were deemed too dangerous, opening up the AI models that rival Mythos in capabilities to all customers within weeks.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) company Anthropic's valuation has skyrocketed to $965 billion (including new investments) after completing a new round of $65 billion financing, surpassing rival OpenAI for the first time in paper value. At the same time, the company announced that it will "take big strides" on the previously restricted network security model, deemed too dangerous, and open up its capabilities to all customers comparable to Mythos' AI model in a matter of weeks. This round of financing was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital. Sources revealed that each lead investor contributed over $20 billion. Alphabet Inc. Class C (GOOGL.US) invested billions as part of a previously promised maximum $40 billion investment; Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN.US) followed up with $5 billion as per the existing agreement. Micron Technology, Inc. (MU.US), Samsung Electronics (SSNLF.US), and SK Hynix also participated in the investment, but the amounts were not disclosed. The combined efforts pushed the actual fundraising amount well beyond Anthropic's initial target of $30 billion. Anthropic confirmed Amazon.com, Inc.'s investment in its official blog, while Alphabet Inc. Class C, Sequoia, and others either declined to comment or did not respond to comment requests. It is reported that this massive financing was quickly finalized within a few weeks, reflecting investors' enthusiasm for this Claude developer. According to previous reports, Anthropic began considering a financing with a valuation of over $900 billion in late April and entered into detailed negotiations earlier this month. In terms of performance, Anthropic is realizing its commercial value at a stunning speed. The company expects second-quarter revenue to reach $19 billion, more than doubling from the previous quarter, and anticipates its first profitable quarter. Sources said the company disclosed to investors that its annual recurring revenue will exceed $50 billion by the end of next month, compared to just $4 billion in July last year. Large-scale opening of "Mythos-level" model imminent While surpassing OpenAI in valuation, Anthropic has clearly accelerated the pace of technological output. The company released the new Opus 4.8 model specializing in automatic encoding on Thursday and stated that it has made "rapid progress" in developing "stronger security measures". This paves the way for the large-scale opening of the Mythos-level model. Mythos was previously described as "capable of identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities in all mainstream operating systems and browsers under user instructions," and due to the significant threat, in April this year, Anthropic authorized only a few large tech companies and Wall Street institutions to use it through the "Project Glasswing" plan, causing global awareness of critical system security. Anthropic further stated on Friday that it will collaborate with the US and allied governments to extend the "Project Glasswing" to more partners, and intends to make models with similar capabilities to Mythos more widely available in the future, but has not provided a specific timeframe. Behind the push for higher valuation and accelerated commercial use of models, the "showdown" between Anthropic and OpenAI is intensifying. OpenAI was valued at $85.2 billion in a round of funding in March this year and is expected to secretly submit a draft application for public offering in the coming days to weeks. Despite the latest influx of financing, sources say that Anthropic is still expected to proceed with its planned initial public offering this autumn. As both sides engage in a battle in AI programming, network security, and consumer markets, the power struggle around security boundaries and commercialization pace is pushing this competition to new heights.
