On May 25th, according to the official website of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the total revenue of the telecommunications industry in the first four months reached 594.1 billion yuan, a decrease of 1.7% compared to the same period last year. In terms of constant prices from the previous year, the total volume of telecommunications services increased by 8% year-on-year.
Economic operation of the communication industry in the first four months of 2026 In the first four months, the overall operation of the communication industry was stable. The total volume of telecommunications services steadily increased, with the continuous advancement of 5G, gigabit optical networks, Internet of Things, and other network infrastructure construction, as well as the steady expansion of connected user scale and rapid growth of mobile internet access traffic. 1. Overall operation situation In the first four months, the total revenue of telecommunications services reached 594.1 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 1.7%. Calculated at constant prices from the previous year, the total volume of telecommunications services increased by 8% year-on-year. 2. Development of telecommunications users Fixed broadband access users steadily increased, with the scale of gigabit users continuing to expand. By the end of April, the total number of fixed Internet broadband access users of the three basic telecommunications companies reached 698 million households, a net increase of 72.71 million households compared to the end of the previous year. Among them, the number of fixed Internet broadband access users with a speed of 100Mbps or more reached 667 million households, accounting for 95.5% of the total number of users; the number of fixed Internet broadband access users with a speed of 1000Mbps or more reached 253 million households, a net increase of 14.25 million households compared to the end of the previous year, accounting for 36.2% of the total number of users and an increase of 1.7 percentage points compared to the end of the previous year. The scale of mobile phone users remained stable with growth, and the number of 5G users grew rapidly. By the end of April, the total number of mobile phone users of the three basic telecommunications companies and China Broadcasting reached 1.838 billion households, a net increase of 109.2 million households compared to the end of the previous year. Among them, the number of 5G mobile phone users reached 1.262 billion households, a net increase of 57.58 million households compared to the end of the previous year, accounting for 68.7% of mobile phone users. The growth of mobile Internet of Things terminal users was fast, and Internet TV (IPTV, OTT) steadily increased. By the end of April, the three basic telecommunications companies had 2.976 billion mobile Internet of Things terminal users, a net increase of 87.63 million households compared to the end of the previous year. The number of Internet TV (IPTV, OTT) users reached 410 million households, a net increase of 1.456 million households compared to the end of the previous year. 3. Use of telecommunications services Mobile internet traffic grew rapidly, and the monthly DOU value was at a high level in April. In the first four months, the cumulative mobile internet traffic reached 142 billion GB, an 18.5% increase year-on-year. By the end of April, the number of mobile internet users reached 1.624 billion households, a net increase of 141.6 million households compared to the end of the previous year. The average monthly mobile internet access traffic per household (DOU) in April reached 23.17GB per household, a 13.5% increase year-on-year and 0.13GB per household higher than at the end of the previous year. Phone call volume continued to decline. In the first four months, mobile phone outgoing call duration reached 629.2 billion minutes, a 5.8% year-on-year decrease; fixed telephone outgoing call duration reached 18.22 billion minutes, a 21.5% year-on-year decrease. In the first four months, the national mobile SMS service volume decreased by 5.8% year-on-year; mobile SMS service revenue decreased by 11.5% year-on-year. 4. Communication capability The construction of gigabit fiber optic broadband networks steadily advanced. By the end of April, the total number of Internet broadband access ports nationwide reached 1.27 billion, a net increase of 189.4 million compared to the end of the previous year. Among them, fiber optic access (FTTH/O) ports reached 1.23 billion, a net increase of 166.9 million compared to the end of the previous year, accounting for 96.6% of the Internet broadband access ports. By the end of April, the number of 10G PON ports capable of providing gigabit network services reached 32.35 million, a net increase of 726,000 compared to the end of the previous year. The construction of 5G networks continued to progress. By the end of April, the total number of 5G base stations reached 5.09 million, a net increase of 171,000 compared to the end of the previous year, accounting for 38.7% of the total number of mobile base stations, an increase of 0.5 percentage points compared to the first quarter. 5. Regional development situation Various regions accelerated the promotion of gigabit and 5G user penetration. By the end of April, the penetration rates of 1000Mbps or higher fixed broadband access users in the eastern, central, western, and northeastern regions were 35.6%, 36.9%, 37.6%, and 30.7%, respectively, with increases of 1.0%, 3.0%, 1.5%, and 1.7% respectively compared to the end of the previous year; the penetration rates of 5G mobile phone users were 68.1%, 69.5%, 68.6%, and 69.4%, respectively, with increases of 2.6%, 3.0%, 2.7%, and 2.9%, respectively, compared to the end of the previous year. Mobile internet access traffic in various regions grew rapidly. In the first four months, mobile internet access traffic in the eastern, central, western, and northeastern regions reached 602.2 billion GB, 332.5 billion GB, 402.2 billion GB, and 83.6 billion GB, respectively, with year-on-year increases of 20.1%, 17.2%, 16.7%, and 20.4%, respectively.
