AMC seeks to leverage the World Cup to further expand into the field of live sports event broadcasting.
AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. Class A (AMC.US) has reached an agreement with Telemundo to live stream the matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in cinemas within the United States. This initiative, targeting Spanish-speaking audiences and focusing on the "event cinema" model, aims to maximize the use of cinema screens during idle daytime hours; this model may even expand to Latin America in the future. AMC CEO Adam Aron pointed out on social media platform X that the potential Latino audience has a great passion for soccer. Under this collaboration, AMC will cater to Spanish-speaking soccer fans by selecting and live streaming matches involving teams such as Mexico, Brazil, and other highly anticipated teams. These live screenings will be ticketed events like other special activities; fans can book seats through AMC's regular ticket purchasing channels and enjoy the high-quality projection and sound effects of cinemas while watching the live matches. The World Cup live broadcast is part of AMC's strategy to deepen its business in the "event cinema" sector. In addition to the World Cup, this strategy also includes concerts, combat events, and various other live programs; such content not only has lower content production risks but also effectively boosts food and beverage consumption in cinemas. By leveraging Telemundo's broadcasting rights, AMC can avoid the cumbersome process of negotiating rights directly with FIFA and instead become a new content distribution channel for the broadcasting company. If the 2026 World Cup cinema live broadcast project receives positive market feedback, it will strongly affirm the feasibility of the business model of using cinemas as venues for live sports events on a regular basis, and it is expected to promote the wider adoption and application of this model at both ends of the American continent (North America and Latin America). Telemundo is a subsidiary of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, which is a department of NBCUniversal, itself a wholly-owned subsidiary of Comcast Corporation Class A (CMCSA.US). The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
