SpaceX is proposing to invest $5.5 billion to launch construction of a new semiconductor production facility in Texas.
Elon Musk's SpaceX company is proposing to invest $55 billion to launch the construction of a new semiconductor production facility in Texas, taking a crucial step towards his grand project named Terafab. According to a public notice released on the official website of Glaems County, the rocket company plans to build a "next-generation vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing manufacturing facility" in the state. If the project is completed in the subsequent phases, the total investment is expected to rise to $119 billion. Musk unveiled the concept of Terafab in March, aiming to produce chips for his Siasun Robot & Automation, space, and artificial intelligence projects. He emphasized the importance of the joint venture between SpaceX and Tesla, Inc., as the semiconductor industry is expanding too slowly to meet the chip quantity needed for his projects and the entire technology industry. "Either build Terafab, or we won't get chips - and we need chips, so we have to build Terafab," he said. SpaceX and Tesla, Inc. representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Musk stated that the project will support a computing capacity of 1 exaflop per year in the future, which is the scale of computing power that he expects the two companies will ultimately consume as they increase their investments in artificial intelligence and Siasun Robot & Automation fields. The facility aims to produce 2-nanometer chips - the cutting-edge level of current technology. However, there were doubts at that time: Will Musk really attempt to build an advanced chip factory? This is a complex and highly competitive industry, and he has no experience in this field. According to the plan, he will challenge industry leaders such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR (TSM.US) and achieve production capacity far beyond the current industry standards. Reportedly, Musk's aides have quickly contacted chip equipment manufacturers including Applied Materials, Inc., Tokyo Electron Ltd., and Lam Research Corporation to obtain quotes and delivery times for the equipment needed for semiconductor manufacturing. An insider revealed that Musk plans to move forward with this at "lightning speed." The information released by Glaems County serves as a notice for a public hearing scheduled for June 3, in which it is clearly stated that SpaceX (officially known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp.) plans to use a plot of land near Gibson Creek Reservoir in Glaems County. The notice indicates that SpaceX's chip factory "will represent a transformative investment in domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in the United States."
