Microsoft Corporation (MSFT.US) makes a bold move with a $18 billion investment in Australian AI infrastructure, marking the largest single investment in company history.

Microsoft Corporation (MSFT.US) announced its largest investment in Australia, committing to invest 25 billion Australian dollars (approximately 17.9 billion US dollars) by the end of 2029 to further deepen its presence in the Asia-Pacific artificial intelligence market. The American tech giant, in a statement released prior to a Microsoft Corporation event in Sydney where CEO Satya Nadella spoke on Thursday, said the company will significantly expand its Azure AI supercomputing and cloud infrastructure in Australia, while also committing to advancing AI security, training, and cybersecurity measures.
Microsoft Corporation, along with its American counterparts Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN.US), Meta Platforms (META.US), and Alphabet (GOOGL.US), is investing billions of dollars globally to compete for AI users. Microsoft Corporation's Copilot is facing tough competition from OpenAI's ChatGPT and Alphabet Inc. Class C's Gemini, and the company is betting on markets like Australia to break through. Nadella stated in the announcement, "Australia presents a huge opportunity to translate AI into real economic and societal benefits."
Microsoft Corporation has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Australian government to align with its recently released data center and AI infrastructure developer guidelines. The company will also collaborate with the newly established Australian AI Security Research Institute, which aims to address AI-related risks and harms. This investment follows Microsoft Corporation's commitment in October 2023 to invest 5 billion Australian dollars in Australia.
In addition to the previously announced plan to train over 1 million people in Australia and New Zealand, Microsoft Corporation also plans to provide AI skills training for an additional 3 million Australians by the end of 2028. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated in the announcement that Microsoft Corporation's long-term investment in Australia's capabilities will help strengthen cybersecurity defenses and create opportunities for Australian workers and businesses.
Australia is working to build a robust AI ecosystem to catch up with economic leaders like the United States and China. Microsoft Corporation's commitment to Australia follows similar investments announced in Japan, Singapore, and Thailand. Overall, Microsoft Corporation and its American cloud computing counterparts plan to invest approximately 650 billion US dollars this year to build energy-intensive data centers.
As part of its AI product portfolio, Microsoft Corporation has shifted its focus more towards selling workplace-oriented AI tool Copilot, rather than offering it for free as part of a software suite. The company is integrating the independent Copilot team for both consumer and business customers to create a more seamless cross-product AI service.
