OpenAI makes its first foray into the media industry! It is rumored to acquire the technology talk show TBPN for hundreds of millions of US dollars.
OpenAI has completed the acquisition of the popular tech business talk show TBPN.
OpenAI has completed the acquisition of the well-known technology business talk show TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network). This move marks OpenAI's first major foray into the media field, sparking widespread attention in Silicon Valley and the global tech industry. Although the official transaction amount has not been disclosed, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter, the acquisition cost as much as hundreds of millions of dollars. After the deal is completed, the existing 11-person team of TBPN will be fully integrated into OpenAI's strategic department and will report directly to Global Affairs Chief Chris Lehane.
It is understood that TBPN was jointly founded by entrepreneurs John Coogan and Jordi Hays at the end of 2024. With its deep accumulation in the live broadcasting field and keen insight into technology business trends, it quickly grew into a leading content provider in the industry. The show has invited top leaders including Mark Zuckerberg and Satya Nadella for in-depth discussions and is praised by the industry as the "ESPN of the tech world" for its unique perspective and extensive industry coverage.
While OpenAI has made acquisitions before, its acquisition targets have mainly focused on recruiting talent from companies in the AI and related fields. Fidji Simo, Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI's applied business, acknowledged the uniqueness of this acquisition in a statement: "In thinking about how OpenAI communicates in the future, I gradually realized that traditional communication strategies do not apply to us - we are not a conventional business."
Explaining the reason for the acquisition, Simo said that OpenAI has a responsibility to facilitate a dialogue about the changes brought about by artificial intelligence. She also mentioned TBPN's "amazing use of punctuation and market intuition," and how they help brands with online promotion. OpenAI sees TBPN as a forward-looking media organization that deeply understands artificial intelligence and can convey technological potential to a broader audience.
In terms of maintaining content independence, OpenAI has given TBPN a high degree of autonomy. The company explicitly stated that TBPN will continue to be responsible for editorial decisions by its original team, independently determining the direction of the program and the guest list, while OpenAI will primarily provide support in terms of funding, technology, and distribution channels to help with its scaling expansion. An OpenAI spokesperson emphasized that the company has no intention of turning TBPN into a profitable enterprise.
This commitment largely alleviates concerns from the outside about tech giants manipulating media discourse. At the same time, the more than ten-year relationship between TBPN co-founder John Coogan and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman adds a humanitarian touch to the merger, as Coogan's first startup company was supported by Altman in the early stages.
TBPN co-founder and co-host Jordi Hays stated in another statement that while the show is sometimes critical of the industry, Sam Altman and his team at OpenAI have shown a "willingness to accept feedback and a commitment to handling it properly".
From a broader market perspective, this move by OpenAI comes as it gears up for its first initial public offering (IPO) later this year. Following a recent round of massive financing of $122 billion, OpenAI's valuation has skyrocketed to $852 billion.
By acquiring TBPN, OpenAI not only gains more leverage in the copyright legal battles with traditional publishers but also gains a platform for exploring the application scenarios of the video generation tool Sora. This move is not only a complement to its application ecosystem but also a substantial step by OpenAI in establishing a complete industry chain and gaining the defining power in the future AI era.
