On March 31st, the Thai government announced that Microsoft Corporation (MSFT.US) plans to invest $1 billion in Thailand over the next two years for cloud computing services and artificial intelligence infrastructure. The statement also mentioned that this investment will include enhancing the digital skills of the Thai workforce.
Prior to this investment announcement, several data center investments have been made to support the development of artificial intelligence. As the second largest economy in Southeast Asia, Thailand is currently accelerating the development of data centers, electronic industries, and power generation projects.
It is reported that Thailand's first artificial intelligence super-scale data center designed for AI processing and high-load computing demand was officially launched in May of last year. This initiative marks Thailand's entry into the era of gigabyte data centers, becoming an important milestone in Thailand's digital economy development. The data center has a power capacity of 20 megawatts and can support high-performance stable computing including GPU operations, providing solid infrastructure support for data-driven, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence industries.
According to a joint research report released by the ASEAN Foundation and Google.org, Thailand has the highest adoption rate of artificial intelligence among ASEAN member countries. The data shows that 90.29% of Thai students and 81.34% of teachers are regular users of generative AI tools. The report also mentions that the size of the ASEAN digital economy is expected to grow from the current $300 billion to $1 trillion by 2030.
