Mistral Secures $830 Million to Build AI Data Center, Expands Europe’s AI Push
Mistral has secured $830 million in debt financing to fund a new AI data center near Paris, reinforcing its strategy to scale infrastructure and reduce reliance on external cloud providers. The facility will be powered by thousands of advanced Nvidia GPUs and is expected to become operational in the second quarter of this year.
Founded in 2023, Mistral has quickly emerged as one of Europe’s leading developers of foundational AI models. While still smaller in scale compared to U.S. players, the company is positioning itself as a key regional alternative by focusing on both model development and infrastructure ownership.
The new data center will run on approximately 13,800 Nvidia GB300 chips, delivering around 44 megawatts of computing capacity. This project is part of a broader plan announced earlier this year to expand compute infrastructure across Europe, including a major investment initiative in Sweden. Mistral aims to reach a total capacity of 200 megawatts across the region by 2027.
The financing round was backed by a consortium of major global banks, signaling strong institutional confidence in Europe’s AI ambitions. The company says demand for localized AI systems is rising rapidly among governments, enterprises, and research institutions seeking more control over their data and computing environments.
Despite being the best-funded large language model startup in Europe, Mistral still trails far behind U.S. competitors in total capital raised. However, momentum is building across the region, with several European AI and infrastructure startups securing large funding rounds in recent months.
Mistral’s latest move underscores a broader shift in the AI landscape, where control over infrastructure is becoming as critical as advances in software. As geopolitical and technological competition intensifies, Europe is increasingly investing in building its own AI ecosystem to ensure long-term autonomy and competitiveness.
