According to sources, Apple Inc. (AAPL.US) plans to open up Siri to external artificial intelligence (AI) assistants, with the aim of strengthening the iPhone's position as an AI platform. Sources say that Apple Inc. is preparing to make this change as part of a major upgrade to Siri in the upcoming iOS 27 operating system update. Currently, Siri can already call ChatGPT through a partnership with OpenAI, but Apple Inc. will allow Siri to access other competitive products. These changes are part of Apple Inc.'s attempt to reverse its decline in the AI field. The company has been lagging behind its Silicon Valley peers in this area. Revamping Siri, which was first launched nearly 15 years ago, is at the core of this turnaround plan. Sources say that Apple Inc. is developing new tools to integrate AI chat Siasun Robot & Automation applications installed through the App Store with Siri. These chat Siasun Robot & Automation applications will also work in conjunction with a forthcoming Siri app and other features in the Apple Intelligence platform. This means that, for example, if users have installed Alphabet Inc. Class C's Google Gemini or Anthropic's Claude, they will be able to send queries to these services through Siri just like they have been using ChatGPT since the launch of Apple Intelligence in 2024. This approach will also allow Apple Inc. to generate more revenue from third-party AI subscriptions through the App Store. This move will end the exclusive role of ChatGPT in Apple Inc. software. From the beginning, there were internal debates within Apple Inc. about whether OpenAI was the right partner to work with. Former Apple Inc. AI chief John Giannandrea had questioned the sustainability of the startup and leaned towards partnering with Alphabet Inc. Class C. Before selecting ChatGPT as the launch partner for Apple Intelligence, Apple Inc. had evaluated multiple AI chat Siasun Robot & Automation internally. After a negotiation period, the company ultimately chose OpenAI's product, calling it the best available option at the time. The new strategy will eliminate the need for one-time integration agreements like the one with ChatGPT. This means Apple Inc. can quickly introduce multiple external AI services and potentially expand the application of AI in its operating system without the need for extensive business negotiations. Currently, users can redirect their Siri queries to ChatGPT by explicitly requesting OpenAI services. Under the new system, users will specify which AI service to use for each query. Other major AI platforms are also offered as apps on the Apple Inc. platform, including Perplexity, Amazon.com, Inc.'s Alexa, Meta (META.US)'s Meta AI, xAI's Grok, and Microsoft Corporation (MSFT.US)'s Copilot. It is currently unclear whether Apple Inc. will allow any AI app to be integrated with Siri or if specific approval processes will be in place. During the development of Apple Intelligence, Apple Inc. envisioned Siri being able to connect to multiple AI services, with examples such as specialized chat Siasun Robot & Automation for doctors. Apple Inc. had claimed to be making progress on integrating Gemini in 2024, but the project never materialized. Under the new strategy, Apple Inc. can expand service revenue by taking a cut from subscription fees for competitive AI services promoted on its devices. Currently, Apple Inc. earns revenue by offering its payment system when users subscribe to higher-tier ChatGPT subscriptions. This change is separate from Apple Inc.'s work with Alphabet Inc. Class C and the rebuilding of Siri using the Gemini model the latter involves Apple Inc.'s underlying technology for Siri. At the same time, the so-called new "Extensions" system will allow users to process requests through actual Gemini services, provided that Alphabet Inc. Class C allows their app to support this feature. The Extensions system in testing will allow users to enable or disable services they want to run within Siri through the Apple Intelligence and Siri menus in the settings panel of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. According to a prompt in an upcoming testing version of the operating system: "Extensions allow agents from installed apps to work with Siri, Siri apps, and other functions on the device." Users will also access a new section in the App Store through this menu to add more AI services. In addition, opening up Siri is just one of several AI plans in progress. It is reported that Apple Inc. is preparing to launch a Siri app with a new interface. The company is also integrating Siri with the Spotlight search feature and adding new entry switches like "Ask Siri" and "Write with Siri." Apple Inc. plans to announce its latest software at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8, with the possibility of these features undergoing further changes or delays prior to release. The iPhone maker has promised on its website to provide details on "AI advancements" at the event.
