Recruiting 12 people daily! OpenAI launches "human wave tactics" to reach a scale of 8000 people.
OpenAI plans to achieve a recruiting speed of approximately 12 new employees per day this year, increasing the number of employees to 8,000 by the end of the year, and introducing the position of "technology ambassador" to enhance commercial conversion capabilities.
American artificial intelligence company OpenAI is pushing organization expansion like never before to close the gap with its competitor Anthropic.
The latest news shows that OpenAI, which is preparing for an IPO by the end of the year, plans to increase its recruitment speed to an average of about 12 new employees per day this year, increasing its current workforce of about 4,500 to 8,000 by the end of the year, almost doubling it.
The new employees recruited this time will focus on areas such as product development, engineering, research, and sales.
At the same time, OpenAI will introduce a new position called "technology ambassador," where these professionals will directly enter the company to help customers deploy and use AI tools more efficiently, thereby enhancing business conversion capabilities.
This model to some extent draws on the successful experience of Palantir's front-line engineers, generating more revenue by deeply embedding in customer business processes.
However, Musk's xAI has also started sending engineers to customer sites in an effort to win business from OpenAI.
To support the rapidly growing talent pool, OpenAI has expanded its office space in San Francisco, USA, by leasing an additional approximately 280,000 square feet (about 26,013 square meters). The total office space in the old Beijing Kingsoft Office Software, Inc. exceeds 1 million square feet (about 92,903 square meters).
However, the competitive environment OpenAI faces is becoming increasingly challenging. Data shows that among enterprise customers who are purchasing AI products for the first time, the proportion choosing Anthropic has reached three times that of OpenAI.
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers and has focused on the enterprise market since its establishment. Its Claude Code programming tool quickly occupied the enterprise market and even achieved a growth rate of $1 billion in annual revenue per week this year. This differentiation path has gradually widened the gap between the two companies in the enterprise market.
Meanwhile, Google is also increasing its AI product layout, putting multiple pressures on OpenAI.
In response, OpenAI's senior management has begun to adjust its strategic direction. CEO Altman issued a "red alert" at the end of last year, urging the team to refocus on its core product, ChatGPT.
Fiji Simo, head of OpenAI's applied business, further emphasized that "side tasks" should be reduced, resources should be focused on optimizing the programming platform Codex, and efforts should be made to integrate it with ChatGPT ChatGPT Atlas web browser to create a desktop "super app" for better sales to consumers and businesses.
It is worth noting that although ChatGPT has accumulated over 900 million users since its launch in 2023, more than 90% of users have not paid, posing a huge challenge for OpenAI in terms of commercialization. Therefore, the company is exploring new revenue models such as advertising while accelerating its tilt towards the enterprise market. It is expected that by the end of this year, the proportion of revenue from enterprise customers will increase from the current 40% to 50%.
