OpenAI Steps Up Programming Assistant Track: Announces Acquisition of Python Tool Startup Astral
OpenAI will acquire the startup company Astral to further expand its business in the field of coding.
OpenAI plans to acquire Astral, a startup company that provides Python tools for developers. This move signifies another investment by the developer of ChatGPT in the rapidly growing coding and developer services market. OpenAI announced on Thursday that the yet-to-be-completed deal will bring Astral's team into its Codex project. The company stated that Codex has over 2 million users, with the number of users doubling since the beginning of this year. Astral's toolkit will help drive Codex (capable of writing software functions, fixing bugs, and running tests) to evolve into a broader developer services platform.
Astral's founder, Charlie Marsh, stated in a declaration, "Astral has been dedicated to building tools that can change the way developers use Python, helping them deliver higher quality software faster." He also added that the company will continue to develop its open-source tools within OpenAI.
Currently, OpenAI is facing tough competition from rivals such as Anthropic, Microsoft, and Cursor, among other startups, as they aim to attract enterprise customers using artificial intelligence as coding assistants. Cursor is reportedly in talks with investors to raise funding at a valuation of $500 billion. Meanwhile, Anthropic is on track to reach an annual revenue of $200 billion.
The acquisition of Astral is the latest in a series of recent acquisitions by OpenAI. This month, OpenAI agreed to acquire the artificial intelligence security startup Promptfoo, adding tools for testing and protecting AI agents before deployment. At the end of last year, OpenAI also acquired startups such as Software Applications Inc. and Neptune.
