The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today (March 17) released the statistics for the volume and prices of external merchandise trade for this month.
Following the publication of the value of external merchandise trade statistics for January 2026 earlier, the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government released the volume and price statistics for external merchandise trade for the same month today (March 17). Comparing January 2026 with January 2025, Hong Kong's overall export volume and import volume increased by 29.5% and 33.9% respectively. Due to the impact of the Lunar New Year holidays falling on different dates, it would be more appropriate to combine and analyze the trade statistics for January and February when making year-on-year comparisons. Comparing the first three months up to January 2026 with the same period in 2025, Hong Kong's overall export volume and import volume increased by 22.1% and 24.8% respectively. Seasonally adjusted figures show that the overall export volume and import volume increased by 7.8% and 9.2% respectively compared to the previous three months up to January 2026. Changes in external merchandise trade volume are calculated by deducting the impact of price changes from changes in merchandise trade value. Comparing January 2026 with January 2025, overall export prices and import prices increased by 3.3% and 3.1% respectively. Price changes in external merchandise trade are reflected by changes in the unit price index of external merchandise trade. This index is calculated based on the average unit price or actual prices of individual commodities. The trade price ratio index is calculated based on the ratio of the overall export price index to the import price index. Compared to the same period in 2025, this index increased by 0.1% in January 2026. Comparing January 2026 with January 2025, the overall export volume to Chinese Taiwan Province (78.8%), Mainland China (36.3%), Vietnam (29.8%) and the United States (19.0%) recorded increases. On the other hand, the overall export volume to India decreased by 19.0%. At the same time, the overall export prices to all major destinations increased: Chinese Taiwan Province (5.1%), India (3.7%), Mainland China (3.3%), the United States (2.9%) and Vietnam (1.0%). Comparing January 2026 with January 2025, the import volume from Vietnam (123.4%), South Korea (59.0%), Mainland China (42.0%) and Singapore (40.0%) recorded increases. On the other hand, the import volume from Chinese Taiwan Province decreased by 0.7%. At the same time, the import prices from all major supply sources increased: South Korea (8.5%), Chinese Taiwan Province (4.1%), Mainland China (3.2%), Singapore (2.4%) and Vietnam (0.4%).
