According to media reports, Yu Bowen, former head of training for the Qwen large model at Alibaba's Tongyi Laboratory, has officially joined ByteDance as the head of post-training for the Seed team's visual models and multimodal interaction team.
According to media reports, Yu Bowen, the former person in charge of training the Qwen (Qianwen) large model at Alibaba (09988) Tongyi Laboratory, has officially joined ByteDance as the person in charge of training the Seed team's visual model and multimodal interaction team. This is the first clear indication of his career direction since he left Alibaba in early March this year. Information shows that after obtaining his PhD in 2022, Yu Bowen joined Alibaba Damo Academy as an algorithm expert (P7) under the Alibaba's highest-level campus recruitment project "AliStar". He was deeply involved in the early training and research of the Tongyi Qianwen large model shortly after joining, quickly becoming a core backbone, and eventually serving as the person in charge of training. According to previous media reports, in March 2026, Alibaba's Tongyi Laboratory initiated an organizational restructuring plan, aiming to split the originally vertically integrated Qwen team into multiple parallel horizontal functional modules including pre-training, post-training, text, and multimodal. This adjustment directly led to a significant reduction in Yu Bowen's management scope and conflicts with his technical philosophy of "deep coupling of pre-training and post-training". In addition, the pressure from Alibaba's senior management for commercialization assessment on the Qianwen team further exacerbated the team's disagreements. On March 3, 2026, Yu Bowen submitted his resignation application and officially left on March 4. His position was later taken over by former Google DeepMind senior researcher Zhou Hao.
