Anthropic announced that its business will expand to the regions of Australia and New Zealand, and plans to establish an office in Sydney in the coming weeks.
The artificial intelligence startup Anthropic has announced that it is expanding into Australia and New Zealand, and will be opening an office in Sydney in the coming weeks. The manufacturer of the Claude AI chat Siasun Robot & Automation stated that this will be the company's fourth office in the Asia-Pacific region, with previous offices in Tokyo, Bangalore, and Seoul. The company stated that this expansion reflects strong demand from businesses in Australia and New Zealand. Anthropic mentioned that in addition to recruiting a team in Sydney, the company also plans to deepen its engagement with Australian institutions and collaborate on projects that promote Australian national interests and priority areas. Anthropic stated that its initial focus will be supporting its enterprise, startup, and research clients. The company noted that it has already collaborated with companies such as Canva, Quantium, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and regional startups. The company mentioned that its executive team will be visiting Australia at the end of March to formally establish some of these partnerships and meet with clients and policy makers. Furthermore, Anthropic stated that it is exploring opportunities to expand its computing capabilities in Australia. The company is considering utilizing existing infrastructure through its third-party partners in Australia to increase local capacity. The company added that discussions regarding long-term infrastructure development in the region are currently in the early stages, and more information will be shared as these plans take shape. According to Anthropic's latest economic index, Australia and New Zealand rank fourth and eighth respectively globally in terms of usage of Claude.ai based on population. These countries have shown strong demand for Claude in computer and programming tasks, as well as in education, teaching, and research. The company noted that it has begun building local teams and partnerships that align with these trends. According to its official website, Anthropic is currently hiring for external affairs and sales positions in Sydney. In the United States, Anthropic has sued the US Department of Defense after the department terminated its contract with the AI startup and labeled it as a supply chain risk. In court documents, Anthropic stated that the US government's blacklisting of the company could result in a loss of billions of dollars in revenue by 2026. Last month, Anthropic, backed by Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN.US) and Alphabet's Alphabet Inc. Class C (GOOGL.US), rejected the Department of Defense's request for unrestricted access to its AI models. US government agencies, including the State Department, Treasury, and Health and Human Services, have stopped using Anthropic's AI products and are turning to competitors like OpenAI in accordance with a new order from the White House. Microsoft Corporation has expressed support for Anthropic in its lawsuit against the temporary restraining order issued against it due to being on the blacklist, as this will allow time for orderly resolution of the dispute.
