Hong Kong achieves first ship refueling with green methanol to assist in the green transformation of the international shipping center.
The world's first methanol dual-fuel powered roll-on/roll-off vessel "Great Honor" successfully completed its first green methanol bunkering operation in Hong Kong.
The world's first methanol dual-fuel powered roll-on/roll-off vessel, the "Port Glory", successfully completed its first green methanol refueling operation in Hong Kong. This marks a significant breakthrough in the collaboration between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, China Merchants Group, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, China International Marine Containers, and other leading companies in response to the national dual-carbon strategy and the implementation of Hong Kong's "Green Ship Fuel Refueling Action Plan", as Hong Kong takes a solid step towards establishing an international green ship fuel refueling center.
The Port Glory completed the refueling operation through a ship-to-ship mode, injecting approximately 500 tons of green methanol, the largest single green methanol refueling volume implemented by domestic shipowners to date, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 85% compared to traditional fuels. The green methanol batch was produced and supplied by CIMC ENRIC and obtained ISCC EU international certification, and the refueling operation was completed by the professional refueling service system of Sinopec (Hong Kong), with China Merchants Energy Shipping as the shipowner ultimately applying the green methanol, showcasing the complete green methanol production-storage-transportation-refueling-application closed-loop chain.
To ensure safe and efficient operations, the relevant departments of the Hong Kong SAR government closely coordinated with enterprises. The Transport and Housing Bureau, Marine Department, Customs and Excise Department, and Immigration Department provided policy guidance, approval facilitation, and full-process support for safety supervision based on the Hong Kong "Green Ship Fuel Refueling Action Plan". Based on the "Strategic Cooperation Agreement to Build Hong Kong Green Methanol Refueling Center" signed in November 2025, the three parties fully leveraged their core advantages in deep-sea transportation, oil and gas, green fuel storage and transportation sales, and energy equipment manufacturing to complete technical validation, program optimization, and emergency preparedness ahead of schedule.
