Destinations such as Japan, Thailand, South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia continue to be popular tourist destinations, while long-haul journeys to Australia and the UK are also favored. Short to medium-haul trips account for about 60% of the total, reflecting the preference of Hong Kong people for cultural experiences and leisure vacations.
The data shows that the average length of travel for Hong Kong people during the Lunar New Year this year is about 7.7 days, with about 40% of Hong Kong tourists booking their trips 31 to 60 days before departure. Nearly half of Hong Kong tourists even book more than 2 months in advance. Similar trends are observed in other markets such as Taiwan, Singapore, and Japan, indicating that tourists from various places are planning their Lunar New Year holiday trips early in order to design their ideal travel itineraries. In terms of age distribution, the 35 to 49 age group has the highest proportion, showing a clear demand for family and parent-child travel. At the same time, the proportion of young travelers aged 18 to 34 and elderly travelers is also on the rise.
Hong Kong is also a popular destination for Asia-Pacific tourists during the Lunar New Year period. Data shows that inbound tourists mainly come from Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore, while the proportion of long-haul tourists from the UK and the US is also significantly increasing. Nearly 80% of inbound tourists choose to stay in four-star or above hotels, reflecting the importance foreign tourists place on quality accommodation experiences.
During the Lunar New Year period, many destinations in East Asia and Southeast Asia benefit from the long holiday period, recording strong growth in inbound arrivals. Vietnam, South Korea, and Indonesia are the fastest-growing markets, with major cities like Seoul, Ho Chi Minh City, and Bali recording booking volumes exceeding 70% year-on-year, demonstrating a strong recovery in tourism in the Asia-Pacific region.
Mainland China remains one of the popular destinations for Hong Kong and Asian tourists to celebrate the Lunar New Year, with a significant increase in inbound tourists from Europe and Oceania. The number of tourists from the UK and New Zealand has grown by more than 150% year-on-year, with major tourist cities including Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou. In addition, Xiamen and Shenzhen also saw significant growth in inbound arrivals, with increases of 60% and 90% respectively.
