Following the launch of a new tool for in-house lawyers by the artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, the stock prices of European legal software and publishing companies have fallen sharply.
After Anthropic released the tool on its GitHub page, the shares of RELX Plc and Wolters Kluwer NV both fell by more than 10%. Pearson Plc's stock price also declined.
Stocks heavily impacted by the disruptive effects of artificial intelligence saw a significant drop.
Anthropic stated that the tool can automate legal tasks such as contract review, classification of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), brief writing, and template-based responses.
However, the company warned that the plugin does not provide legal advice. They stated, "AI-generated analysis reports should be reviewed by practicing lawyers before being used as a basis for legal decisions."
The drop in stock prices comes at a time when companies believed to be vulnerable to AI disruption are facing setbacks. A basket of "European AI risk stocks" from UBS Group fell by 4.7% on Tuesday, reaching a new record low.
