On February 3rd, the Hong Kong government Census and Statistics Department released the latest temporary figures on restaurant earnings and purchasing volume.
On February 3, the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department published temporary figures on restaurant receipts and purchases for the year 2025. The temporary estimate for the total restaurant receipts in Hong Kong for the whole year of 2025 is HK$109.6 billion. Compared to the whole year of 2024, this represents a 0.2% increase in value but a 0.9% decrease in quantity. Meanwhile, the temporary estimate for total restaurant purchases in 2025 is HK$35 billion, a 0.3% decrease compared to the previous year. When analyzed by restaurant category, the total receipts for Chinese restaurants in 2025 decreased by 2.9% in value and 4.3% in quantity compared to 2024. Non-Chinese restaurants saw a 4.0% increase in value and a 3.4% increase in quantity. Fast food restaurants had a 0.8% increase in value but a 0.6% decrease in quantity. Bars saw a 1.7% increase in value and a 0.5% increase in quantity. Miscellaneous eating places experienced a 2.8% decrease in value and a 4.5% decrease in quantity. Looking at the fourth quarter alone, the temporary estimate for the total restaurant receipts in the fourth quarter of 2025 was HK$27.8 billion, a 0.9% increase compared to the same period last year. During this period, the total restaurant purchases were estimated at HK$9.1 billion, a 2.5% increase year on year. Excluding the impact of price changes, the quantity-based estimate for the total restaurant receipts in the fourth quarter of 2025 remained at a similar level to the same period last year. By restaurant category in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared to the fourth quarter of 2024, Chinese restaurants saw a 0.3% increase in value but a 1.0% decrease in quantity. Non-Chinese restaurants had a 4.0% increase in value and a 3.1% increase in quantity. Fast food restaurants experienced a 0.4% decrease in value and a 1.7% decrease in quantity. Bars had a 1.5% increase in both value and quantity. Miscellaneous eating places saw a 4.2% decrease in value and a 5.7% decrease in quantity. Compared to the previous quarter, the seasonally adjusted temporary estimate for the total restaurant receipts in the fourth quarter of 2025 increased by 2.6% in value and 1.8% in quantity. To further understand the short-term business performance in the catering industry, the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department has compiled statistics on restaurant receipts and purchases for individual months within the quarter. By month, comparing October, November, and December of 2025 to the same months in the previous year, the temporary estimate for restaurant receipts show a 3.9% increase, 0.6% decrease, and 0.5% decrease respectively. Excluding the impact of price changes, the quantity-based estimate for restaurant receipts in October, November, and December of 2025 increased by 2.6%, decreased by 1.8%, and decreased by 1.5% respectively compared to the same months in the previous year. A spokesperson for the Hong Kong government stated that the total restaurant receipts in the fourth quarter of 2025 increased by 0.9% compared to the same period last year. Overall, the total restaurant receipts for the year 2025 slightly increased. Looking ahead, the local consumption sentiment in Hong Kong is improving, employment income continues to grow, and the number of visitors to Hong Kong continues to increase significantly, providing continued support for restaurant business.
